turning targets £250 - anyone interested

I've just built a set of turning targets (bank of 5), and am getting the electronics done for me to give me accurate variable face times.

I'm thinking my total cost for this is going to under £200, plus a fair bit of time; but as I was made redundant a month ago, time is cheap...

Would anyone be interested in buying a set if I started cloning what I've built? Obvioulsy no commitment for now, but just a toe in the water to see if anyone one would be interested? I'm figuring I'd be needing around £250 to make this worthwhile.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

I think turning targets are useful, but at the moment there is a real dearth in the availability of ISSF compliant knock down targets for 5 shot competitions - just a thought as these wouldn't involve electronics? Don't know whether your Blue Peter skills can stretch to something like this ??

Ok guys, sounds like there is a bit of interest. I'm waiting for the electronics to finish things off and will then do a YouTube video or something, and then sell on that 'well know auction web site' and see what happens.

To answer some of the questions here - yes they could be portable. The ones I've made so far are a single bank of five and take targets up to 11inches across, and are on a heavy steel base. I could make combinations of single target, and double target that would link together to give greater portability and also the opportunity to run longer banks. When I set up five I was thinking about a single shooter doing Rapid Fire, but I could see a run or eight targets would allow eight shooters to do a Standard course of fire or similar.

Regarding the falling plates - I'll explore this, and yes agree that this is one of the most fun ways to shoot AP. It's almost audience friendly, which makes it a good thing to do at club open days etc. What I would do is make it with changeable size inserts, so not just the ISSF standard, but also some bigger holes to encourage less experienced shooters.

    Cheers

Can I ask how you are turning them? Actuators/motors etc?

We have an old set here that run from a pneumatic actuator. The electronics broke, so I designed a computer program to control them from a USB port.
It works by putting 12v onto a solenoid to face, and 0v to edge.

The compressor is however noisy and breaks occasionally and I wondered how you were doing it, as we could replace the pneumatics for something better..

I might be interested in a few years, when I hope to have rural land.

And if postage to the States isn't prohibitive.

You can get a new 24lt oil free air comp from the likes of B & Q for less than £140 that will do the job. That's all we use.

Simple windscreen wiper motor, uses microswitches to cut power at face and edge and the electronics provide power after a preset delay.

I've used pneumatics in the past to power a large bank of full size targets for full bore pistol. We used a nitrogen bottle which was cheap and lasted forever. Ask Air Products about bottle rental.

Our club is looking at acquiring such equipment at the moment so your initiative is timely for us.

    We will watch developments keenly.

I would be interested in these

2 formats, banks of them for club use, and also may I suggest perhaps standalone units for individual use?

dependant on how complex the electronics are, and how competent you are? maybe pre programming it with the popular T&P1, MT and 1500 timings etc? as well as having user definable times

I would jump at the chance to buy something like this that I could take to my range and use on my own for practise.

we have no turners at our club, so some of the short exposure comps come as a bit of a shock to the system when I go to bisley etc
Don't worry it only seems kinky the first time
