A person only truly dies when there is no one left to remember them.

May you find peace and love in the memories you cherish.

Jan was laid to rest today

Her funeral was attended by enough people to completely fill the church! We had professors and staff from Jan's college, present and former students, lodge brothers of mine, family members, friends, neighbors, members of our old cannon crew, members of our church, members of our gym, former co-workers of mine.

I was stunned at the number of people who cried. I don't mean the obligatory sniffling that a lot of women (and an increasing number of men) engage in as a polite gesture on such occasions: but the number of people, men and women alike, who really broken down sobbing.

She was laid to rest in a crypt in a beautiful indoor mausoleum, so the weather won't be a factor whenever I visit her.

Our minister conducted a really beautiful service, and Jan's son (who is an ordained minister) delivered the sermon. The minister also read a Remembrance of Jan that I'd written (but that I knew that I'd be too choked up to read myself): I'm going to post it on here in another message.

For all that, the one incident that I will really treasure the most was a young woman, one of Jan's former students, who came up to speak with me as I was leaving the mausoleum. She told me, in a voice choked with emotion, and with tears streaming down her face, that without my Jan's help, she would have flunked out of college. She couldn't stop crying.

Thank you all for your concern, prayers, message, floral tribute, and kisses.

    Your UBC friend,
