For Sale: Martini Henry Cavalry Carbine

Selling my Martini Henry Cavalry Carbine to part fund the purchase of a new Mauser for my collection.....

Martini Cavalry Carbine in .577/450 calibre (so not on ticket like the .303 versions) with a VR IC 1 1888 dated receiver. No Nepalese or other foreign service marks. Sold out of service stamp to left of receiver and also stamped DP on knox form and forend iron. Cleaning rod looks like a replacement to me and the bore is dark and uncleaned. Action works nicely and no pin in the chamber like a lot DP rifles. Sold a wall hanger display piece only and exempt under Section 58(2) if held as a curio.

Forgot to add... it is missing the small bolt at the front of the receiver, it has a brass bolt in at the moment which does the job but the new owner will probably want to replace.

Anyway I've dropped the price to under £300 posted, I doubt there is another Cavalry Carbine out there at this price. This is cheaper than a modern Kyber pass copy !

This is a DP drill purpose rifle and is listed and priced as a wall hanger display piece only. Non DP Cavalry Carbines usually sell for around £700 This one is half that price.

The DP specs called for a shortened firing pin and a saw cut ahead of the knox form. The cut has been in filled on this piece and is clearly visable in the second picture. They can and have been be tig welded up but I would not recommend this!

I leave it on here til the weekend at which point I'll be breaking it up for spares and listing on flea bay !

    Cheers

    Hi Jim

The sad fact is DP rifles are often worth more as parts. For example I have just restored another Martini for a friend of mine. The replacement stock was £45 and the butt plate and screws £20. The action was okay and someone who is much better on a lathe than me turned up a new firing pin and made a new extractor in exchange for an old Airsporter. The front wood was a pain to get and cost £90. It didn't match the butt so everything was carefully sanded down (to preserve the cartouches) and reoiled to match. Barrel bands etc and a bayonet bar were nearly £80 and the rear sight £40.

The DP/saw cut in the chamber although not very deep on this one rules out making it a shooter as far as I am concerned. I have seen examples rewelded and Proofed but that isn't a road I would want to go down !!!!

My plan with this one if it doesn't sell as a complete rifle is to sell the butt, front wood and metal work and use the remaining barrelled action to make a Skeleton/Cut-Away action and display it with my Lee Enfield SKN actions.

    Cheers
