The Chequering on my Stock is sharp, bordering on uncomfortable but it's not at all fragile.
I believe the newest Stock's have Laser Etched "Chequering" these may be the problem one's, if any.

    Trev,
A guy at our club bought a 400 a few weeks ago & the grooves surrounding the forend checkering panals are pale bare wood, the rest of the stock & checkering are stained & finished as you would expect.

Has the chequering been oiled? This can soften it up.

I've just got a Walnut one ...as you say its sharp but not at all fragile, sounds like a flaw in the piece of wood.

it probably a one-off, you would think that AA would change it for you

The beech chequering on my S410 is very deep and sharp, and the points are gradually breaking off

But it is a working gun so I'm not that fussed, soon fit a new one if it looks too scruffy, I do take a lot more care with the metal bits tho
