Hi all,
According to John Knibbs in "The Golden Century" p.321, an EG prefix is a .177 Airsporter Mark III/IV and was only produced 1968-1969. If this is so, it is probably a rarish prefix. Don't know what differences there are between the Mark III/IV and the earlier Mark II version, not a lot I suspect.

So it does, dogsbody! When I posted above that it's a Mk2 Airsporter I took it from the list by johnbaz on the BSA Owners Group website, which I assumed had been taken from the Knibbs book.
The same list is on the BBS HERE and HERE.
In the text Mr Knibbs is quite specific about EG being for the .177 cal Mk3 Airsporter.

Hello Bill
I copied out the list from a book that i borrowed from the library years ago, it could be that i made a mistake when copying or the info in the book was wrong as it seems strange that the Mk3 airsporter isn't mentioned in the list i posted
I can't remember which book i copied it from either

Hi,
John Knibbs book the Golden Century does indeed state that an E.G. Airsporter is a Mark 111/1V example...Hillers book states that it is a Mark 11,so the answer is John Knibbs is right after all he is quoting from BSA's own record's...
In any case this early Airsporter is probably quite rare not many Airsporters were produced in .177....

Thanks to all who replied to my question ( i this a Club or just another Airsporter.)
It appears that the vendor gave the wrong information,
The no is ec3009,this seems to indicate that it is indeed a Club
i am due to examine the rifle soon, if it isatidy i shall buy it.
At £155.00 it would appear to be a good buy.
John Knibbs has 'EC' down as a Mk1 Airsporter!
The first part of his list for prefixes starting with 'E' is as follows (taken from Golden Century):
E -- Club .177 1948-50
EA - Airsporter/Club .177 1950-54
EB - Airsporter Mk1 .177 1955-57
EC - Airsporter Mk1 .177 1956-62
ED - Airsporter Mk1/Mk2 .177 1959
EE - Airsporter Mk2 .177 1959-65
EF - Airsporter Mk3 .177 1966-68
EG - Airsporter Mk3/4 1968-69
EK - Airsporter Mk4 .177 1969-71
EL - Airsporter Mk5 .177 1971-74
