I think you were on the right line, Mick. If it's the gun I'm thinking of it was a lovely Venom Varminter and centre-spread in one of the mags (Airgun World I think) in or around 1987. I used to have the picture on my wallI was wrong.
The gun I was thinking of was the Gold Sierra from the Northern Arms Company as given away in the Airgunworld Annual 1987.
