    which pistol

    Hi,
just wondering if anybody can give me some advice. I fancy doing some 10 m target shooting but not sure what to buy. Sub £350, i have seen lots of rohm actions and an old fwb c25 advertised but someone advised me to buy a hw 75. Are these any good and any other suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

    cheers anthony

Hi Tonyw and welcome to the forum,

I'm sure there will be lots of advice coming from members here, but my tuppence worth is find a club, join and use their club pistols for at least a few weeks, then you'll have better idea of what you want, what you want to use it for, and possibly even find out who has what you want for sale locally.

Its very easy to buy the wrong thing at the wrong price when you are just starting out. £350 spent on tat is £350 wasted.

    Cheers

The C25 will be more capable than the HW75 for 10m shooting.

The trigger the sights and the grip are all better on the C25. Co2 is not an issue for a 10m match pistol. You are not rapid firing it and most 10m shooting is indoors.

The fit of the pistol is very important. So you should really get to a club and try a few out as already suggested.

Good advice above and could save you wasting a small fortune on the wrong kit.

10m is a specialised sport and you'll quickly want to upgrade from a HW75 to something with better grips for a start - so personally I wouldn't start there...

Keep your eye out out for a S/H FAS AP604 or FWB 65/90 as both would be within your budget and would make good starter guns plus you'll be able to sell them on when you want to upgrade without losing any money if you've bought well.

I was in a similar position a couple of weeks ago and found myself buying a Alpha Sport CO2. It seems great to me, but I'm not sure about the grips, so I'd agree with the advice above. (I bought the pistol unseen through an advertisement on the online version of Airgun Shooting. A little risky, maybe; but then ...) When I was looking around I spoke to Robert Clevely of Checkmate Guns. (No connection.) He was very helpful, had quite a few second-hand pistols in stock, and is, I think, Liverpool way -- so not _too_ far from you? I'd be glad to have that kind of shop locally. Now I need to search the threads to find out how to dispose of the CO2 bottles ...

Thats a good suggestion and he's in Chorley actually so only about 12 miles from Preston.
At least if you get a gun from him it will be in fine fettle.

Hi Anthony some good advice there but you must try as many guns as you can at your club even if it takes several weeks. Then decide on a budget and squeeze it as high as you can afford(or you may soon outgrow your purchase) then list all the guns that fall into your budget and work out the pros and cons and ask advice from here and your fellow club shooters and make a shortlist. The final decision will be yours and if you take your time and NOT rush in you will be rewarded.
You are lucky I shoot air rifle so a lot of my budget goes into kit!!

    Cheers Tony.

A Tau 7 if you can get 1. They're GREAT for the money. I shoot better with it than with my morini, steyr or Aeron!
I agree on the not-HW part, its not a pure matchpistol.
I personally, very much dónt like the FWB65's etc, they're balance is far back for me, and I hate the cocking stroke. So certainly try before you buy! I prefer the Diana LP10 really.
Besides that, there are lots of other CO2 matchpistols around, walther, FWB, etc.

The best advice is try different ones at your local club then discover which ones are suitable & match your budget as previously suggested.
Another one to consider is the Baikal IZH46M that depending on condition could be purchased for £250 - £300, (new they are now about £460 from York Guns I think).

    Hi Anthony,

I started with a Rohm Twinmaster action with anatomical grips and have recently upgraded to a Pardini ( bought from Check Mate guns in Chorley) My average went up immediately. There are lots factors but for me I felt more confident with the Pardini.

I am not convinced that the Rohm trigger is the best around but it is something that you can get used to. The main advantage with the Rohm is that it is upgradeable from the action upwards. Start with a sub £300 pound pistol and upgrade as and when you can afford.

A good place to look for a S/H target pistol is T & J J McAvoy in Standish near Wigan. I bought a B96 there and it was all they said.

Having said all that the best advise that I can give is to join a club:
and see if you like the various disciplines
    see what guns are used
    try the club guns
don't buy one on a whim ( as I do when I am allowed out with a credit card)
And I have been told by several gun shops that most target pistols are sold within clubs.

    Regards

    bernard
