    Flintlock Pistol

    Hi,
this is my first post in this dark section so be gentle chaps! I have just found an old flintlock pistol in the cellar-it belongs to my father. The thing is well marked but as you can see it comprises of stock, barrel and trigger. Has anyone any idea what this is and more importantly...is it worth anything!
    The photos are here.

Thanks in advance...out of interest is this too far gone for a project?

I would answer both questions by saying: I don't know (twice).

But I would add that, as to its worth, I'd take it to an antique gun dealer and have it appraised.

As a DIY project - assuming it's not worth much - do you plan to shoot it? If so, I'd have it looked over by a gunsmith who's familiar with antiques, to be sure it's safe to shoot. AND, it's my understanding that you'll need to have it on FAC.

    Hi Jim,
I was not thinking of repairing it myself as its way beyond me, maybe I will have to use it as a paperwieght for the time being!

It looks to me that your Father may have found a barrel.
The butt looks as though it is homemade and the it does not look as though a lock has ever been inlett into the butt. With the number of fittings that would be needed to bring the pistol back to something like decent it would be very costly.
Is this possibly a wall piece? There does not appear to be a flash hole for the pan? (And no pan).

It is possible to buy a percussion or flintlock pistol for a little as £50 - £130 so I don't think it is worthwhile trying to restore it. And, judging by the amount of corrosion on the outside of the barrel, it may be unsafe to use.

If it is a genuine barel it is a nice keepsake, but I would do as you suggest, keep it as a paperweight.

    This is just my opinion.

I agree with enfield2band. Looks to be a home made job. Financially it would not be worth restoring but as a project for 'fun', may be worth a go. It would cost a good couple of hundred pounds to complete plus a lot of hand finishing.

    cheers

I would agree that it looks as if the stock is not original. One of the pictures shows a screw head that looks much too modern.

Probably best as a wall decoration or paperweight. I certainly wouldn't want to risk firing that barrel.

    I'm with you on that.
