A good UK based supplier is John Muirden at Unbeaten Tracks . The website isn't the easiest to navigate (Vellies are here) but John is a really helpful guy. Rogue Vellies are the most comfortable boots I've ever owned bar none. They're made in Africa and perfect for the climate. If the suede is a bit stiff (they vary) get them soaking wet and walk around in them, that should soften them up.

The Rogue clothing is made by Supply Company (see below). Be careful with their sizing as I found the shirts come up very large.

If you're passing through Jo'burg Cape Union Mart in Sandton City Mall are pretty good for cotton bush wear.

I'm very dubious about safari vests, they tend to be worn for effect rather than functionality

If you want to pick up good, cheap kit AND donate to a good cause try KwaZulu Natal Wildlife Conservation Trust the stuff is made by The Supply Company whose stuff I've used a fair bit with no complaints. They can ship from SA to UK no problem.

Which part of Africa are you off to?

    Congratulations!

Sometime back Cabelas was selling the Beretta safari jacket (something on the lines of what Hemingway wore). Since it has a lot of big pockets it could be quite handy for photographers as well - particularly early in the morning.

    Have fun.

    Hi,

Just had a look at 'unbeaten tracks' website. John Muirden must be almost unique... someone who sells quality goods, at prices that can only be described as CHEAP!! I know where I'll be buying all my summer gear from now

Hehehe - I took jeans, comfy combat/cargo trousers, lots of T shirts, and some warmer stuff for the evening...

Decent rucksack for your water/food rations and gear - job done

I'm afraid that I've seen that kind of thing far too often..... The worst example was when we stopped in at the Chobe Safari Lodge for a beer after a few weeks fishing in the Caprivi Strip. We were confronted by a Landy full of German/Swiss tourists in immaculately pressed khakis and, yes, pith helmets. Four stinking fishermen (one clutching a frozen Tigerfish) were not on the itinerary

It just cracks me up, they dress like a cross between Karamoja Bell and Ernest Hemingway for a "Safari" where you'll probably never even leave the vehicle..
