    Proceed with caution ?

When Jamie and I were testing some new homeloads (some time ago now) I thought I would have a go and see if the ASE Utra Dual moderator would 'do the business'.

This is one of the best and most solidly built moderator for rimfire (.22LR, .22WMR and .17HMR) . . . Surely the pressures from the little old Hornet can't be that much greater ?

    WRONG !!!!

The first couple of rounds went OK, but then Jamie called that I was nolonger 'on the target'. I put one really low to see if I could see it hitting the bank, only to have Jamie call that I was now back on target, but instead of a nice round hole, had produced something akin to a church window !

On inspection, the internals of the moderator were totally blown, with all the plates well out of shape. The thick end plate was also distorted and showing signs that the rounds were clipping on their way through.

So back to the ASE jet-Z CQB and no problems at all.

There was a happy ending - I contacted ASE who put me in touch with Peter Jackson who very kindly sent me out a new set of internals - at no charge. Excellent Customer Service !

Anyway, if there is a moral to this tale, then it is 'proceed with caution' - the Hornet is hotter than you think !

    Regards

    JonP

Mine is a 1958 BRNO, and my mate has a 1948 model. Like the guys say, 12.6 of Lilgun and 35gr V-max. Mine does 3 shot 1 ragged hole groups at 100yd, 3000fps, and I NEVER want a mod on it. What a beautiful noise....the best crack in rifles.

We should start a ,'I love my Hornet' thread. It seems as if it's becoming popular once again. I can't see anything not to like about this little round.

I stopped counting at least ten years ago at 200 foxes from one local farm with the Hornet.

I bought a Czech 527 from low mill ranges Cumbria,it is second hand but I was told it had only fired 7 rnds!i have cut it down to 18" and put a s5 mod on,using 35 v max with 12 gns h110 getting one ragged hole at 100 yds with a 5 shot group, absolutely delighted with the accuracy the rifle is a joy to use!

Look forward to seeing them John. Your old Hornet is the scurge of the local fox population having taken a fair few out since i've had it. Great rifle the 527 and a nice calibre.

She sure does John, very dice looking indeed. I'm tempted now!
