Hi Derek - welcome to the BBS

Nobody can answer to your question but you

The reason for me saying this is that it depends on the magnification you wish to shoot on, most people use x10 as it works out pretty well for rangefinding using the focus, and mil spacing on the ret works as well. Therefore if you do this then you need a scope of x10 mag or greater to get the x10 mag (fixed 10, 3-12, 4-16 etc). The one constant is that you need to have a smaller objective, probably between 40-44mm

I have observed more top shots going down the mag to x9 or x8 - if you go this way a 3-9 would be fine, but of course you can't change your mind and go up in mag if you have bought a 3-9.

Your best bet is to shoot a round with borrowed scopes on say x10, then shoot it again on x8. See which suits and make a decision thereafter.

If you can't do this, and really have to buy a scope before you start, then a 3-12x42 is about as versatile as it gets.
