Get a cotton/linen rag eg old shirt about 9" sq and apply a few drops of oil.
My recommendation is Ballistol as, if over time, it seeps onto the wood, it doesn't cause harm unlike mineral oils eg Express Gun oil or 3 in 1 which can 'rot' the wood. http://www.ballistoluk.co.uk/
Keep it in a plastic ziplock/re-close-able bag (normally for keeping sandwiches in) and wipe the metal surfaces after every use.
If you have a nice walnut stock, something like CCL oil is great but ordinary walnut cooking oil will do. http://www.uttings.co.uk/Product/655...ditioning-oil/
You can also use their little sachets that contain a small reusable wipe that lasts for yonks. http://www.ballistoluk.co.uk/acatalog/info_B2190.html
Moving hinges, bearings etc etc get a drop oil every now and again but the secret with using oil, IMHO, is to go easy and not use too much.
It's not rocket science but a wipe over with an oily rag before storage is a great way to protect the metalwork/blueing. NONE of my rifles have damage/pitting to the metalwork.
