Crosman M417 Pictorial Review

Here is a pictorial review of my New MSP Rifle the Crosman M417

(some pictures need to be clicked on, due to only 13 pictures are allowed)

Firstly the Box

The box is sturdy, with two big staples attached when purchased.

The sights come in a resealable bag, 5shot clip & paperwork/manual in sealed bag
(cannot put rifle back in box when sights are on)

The Manual folds out all information on one side.

Rifle & Components

Comprises of Rifle, Front-Rear Sights, 5 shot Clip, Front Sight Tool & Storage Magazine (stores Sight Tool & Clip).
Rifle is made from strong plastic and is lightweight but doesn't feel like a toy!

Simply hand screw onto top weaver rail

Fit Rear Sight

Simply hand screw onto top weaver rail

M417 Ready To Use

M417 put together with Tin of Crosman 0.177 Domed Pellets.

Load Clip

Place 5 pellets into clip,
(Careful not to pinch skirt of Pellets, third one in)

Retractable Stock

The Stock is Retractable, depress latch under stock & pull back. Once retracted the stuck is still very study and solid

Manual Safety

This is a push button from left to right in the Rifle

Pump Rifle

This is a Multi Pump Rifle. Quotes in Manual, no more than 10 Pumps, minimum is 3 Pumps.
(The Handguard can compress and scratch/mark the inside)

Inserting Clip

Pull back bolt, insert mag, close bolt. When manual indexing mag, there is a positive notch that you can feel,
letting you know that pellet is ready to go into the breech

M417 Ready to Shoot

With the Stock retracted, I can get into a good positive stance.

The sights are good the rear sight has a flip 'O' with two sizes

UBC Vintage Target

5 shots in each bullseye target, sights not zero'ed. The trigger is good, abit on the heavy side.
However I am not expecting a match trigger.

Front Sight Tool

This is to be used for zeroing Rifle. (I did not have enough time to actally use tool)

Ideal For Younger Shooters



With the option of the retracting stock, young shooters can shoulder the rifle
much better and with the lightweight it is also easy to manage.
The thing they may struggle with is the Pumping.
However Children must be supervised at all times.
So the ownership is on the guardian to load it.

Ft/lbs information

I tested the rifle at Solware >> HERE << with there chrono.
I done 5 shots with 3 pumps, 5 shots with 5 pumps and 5 shots with 10 pumps. See ft/lb data below.

3 Pumps using AA Fields

1.72, 1.67, 1.72, 1.49, 1.67 ft/lbs

5 Pumps using AA Fields

3, 2.8, did not register, 3, 2.8 ft/lbs

10 Pumps using AA Fields

4.5, 4.4, did not register, 3.9, 4.5

More information

For me I am more than happy to use 3 pumps in the back garden, it is less tiring and more conveinient.
Where as doing 10 pumps would be more hassle for a prolonged plinking session.
However, if you are at a club that has a longer range, with 10 pumps and added power this will have its advantages.
I would of preferred it if it was a SSP like the older AIR17.

I asked my 8yr old daughter to try it on the metal plate targets,
she was able to hold it, aim unsupported and hit the plates.
I can honestly say I am very happy with the rifle and think it is an
excellent garden gun. It feels solid yet light weight.

I have not tried the bb set up so I can't comment.

I intend to put Scopes, Red Dots & Lasers on and test in the near future

M417 & AIR17 Comparision

I also have the opportunity to compare M417 to the earlier Version AIR 17

Cosmetic Looks, goes to the M417
Build quality, goes to M417. It feels sturdier
Manual Mag Indexing, goes to the M417 as there is a notch in the Breech, AIR 17 you need to look to see if has lined up properly
Pumping Rifle, goes to AIR17 for the aspect of it being Single Stroke
Trigger, on par with each other
Sights, goes to M417 as they are adjustable
Accessories, goes to M417 as able to put different sights, torches & lasers with Weaver Rails fitted

My Nephew came round today and asked if I had got my new rifle yet. I said yes & asked him if he wanted ago. He even asked if he could wear my camo hat

So we both set up the range.

Logan loaded the 5 shot clip



Showed him how to insert the clip


I pumped it & passed rifle to Logan


First few shots I supported the rifle



Then he could hold aim & shoot cans unsupported & he was keeping his trigger finger away until ready to take the shot.


As said in my initial post that this gun is ideal for very young shooters. Logan asked if he could load it himself. I told him it would be too hard but let him try ;-) . To which he said it was, then he was more than happy to just manual index the clip.

they look great, i might look for one at midland game fair.....but i think it is way unfair we seem to pay about £140 in the us they about about £60....(
