To me it's any gun that is obsolete..
Cheers, John
can it be new but rare, or is the market limited to older guns, and if so how old. Do collectors buy guns for the condition, and performance of the weapon? or just the fact that they are very hard to come by, or very old. Say for instance a jackle rifle, they are not rare as many were made, but they are still collectable?
Thanks.

I believe the Jackal is a nice collectable, in my eyes anyway... Took me forever (in the USA) to finally land one, I wanted one back in the early 80's and had no way to get it from UK back then.... I think a collection could be anything (item) s you put together that has appeal to you . It would be your collection. And it seems no matter what items a person decides to collect , there will always be someone else in the world who admires it too . So it only takes a few people to make something collectable in the internet world. See the cool Jackal website .

A 'collectable' gun can be anything a particular collector wants to collect.
I specialise in Webley, but also have BSA, Crosman, Weihrauch and Walther items in my collection.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and beauty generates desire so it's whatever floats your boat. Some things are easier to collect than others especially if you're in a very small minority but at the same time there'll be very little demand if you wish to downsize.
That's what the head says, anyway, the heart beats a bit faster when I see the words Webley Service Mk I or Improved Model D.
As long as you enjoy what you do, without hurting anyone else, it doesn't really matter.

yes , the older guns interest me more as well. Many of todays guns are only about function. I find many of them , heavy, awkward, ugly and poorly constructed .
For me it comes down to one thing...
Am I buying it as an essential hunting/target tool or am I buying it because it simply appeals to me as an airgun and I "desire it"
As my wife likes to remind me "you can only use one at a time"
So why did I buy my 60th air rifle this week?
(as far as she knows it's my 27th)
Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
oh my god! 60! i only have just the one. funny i was in the studio with a band last night they asked, how many basses do u have....just the one i said. Then i did think that people often have many. Thing with me is i only like to use one at a time, personlly my bass does all i want it to do, as does my gun, but i do change that quite alot, but still one at a time. I just have never found clinical guns that interesting to own, and as i dont hunt cant justify it to own. today i tried out a paintball gun, that was awesome fun......

I like airguns that are stylish, well designed, high quality or unusual in their operation. Any one of those features will make me want to add it to my collection!
Like the mans says, I have a small collection of air rifles and pistols that are a mixture of what were made when I made my first purchase of an air rifle as a teenager way back in the early eighties and modern precharged rifles that I think will become collectable classics in a few years time. I hope.
Too many air guns to list but to count them all I need to take my shoes & socks off as well

Someone posted some before-and-after photos of ' thumbhole ' stocks on here a while ago. To me they were almost works of art. I ship old Bedford trucks from New Zealand where its possible to find really nice driftwood (low population, lots of rivers, plenty of coastline) which I fetch back for the eldest daughter who uses it in her floristry business. Those stocks had that sort of organic, weathered appearance to them. Beautiful ( to me)
Having said that I often admire a 6 wheel drive grader as a totally functional piece of kit - everything does at least one job and there are no frills. There is elegance in its simplicity. As I said in an earlier post beauty is in the eye of the beholder choose how much of a contradiction it can appear. After all I'm married to a woman with grey hair but can find other hues attractive ( as long as she doesn't know ).
