.308 N140 recommendations required

Im currently waiting for the arrival of my new .308 Remington 700 police and was woundering what loads people use. I stated N140 as its the same powder as what i load my .223.

Any recommendations on bullet selection and powder weight would be helpful.

Well for target shooting I use:

168 grn Sierra Matchkings, 42.6 grn N140, Federal Gold Cup Primers, 2.215 COL (ogive reading). Average velocity 2626 f/sec

from my Rem 700 .308

In my Accuracy Intl I use 155grn SMK Palma, CCI Br primers and 46.0 grns N140.

Sako TRG 22 - 26" barrel.

45grains of N140 in Lap case with 155grn sierra matchking. Primer is Rem 9 and 1/2. Gives velocity of 2750.

My own experience in .308 is that Varget is excellent for 155g bullets and N140 better for the heavier ones.

M67 Kongsberg 1 in 12 26" barrel

N140 45gr, Federal Gold primers, SMK 2156c Palma 2729 FPS.

My new rifle will be starting out at 46gr, the rest the same, but with a 30" barrel/Barnard action (at the advice of the builder, mik mak).

N140 used to be THE powder for F/TR until some started going for screamers and using double base powder, and for some reason it was hard to get for a while.

I want to preserve my barrel so I am going to stick with the 140. DO73.6 (AA2520) used to leave my barrel like an allottment!!

48gn of n140 on a 125gr nosler ballistic 20 thou off worked best in my PSS when I had one.

With 155 grn bullet heads I would start at 43 grns N140, this will be accurate and despite what some people think perfectly adequate for 500 to 600 shooting, step up in 0.2 increments, take your time and enjoy the time spent trying different loads for accuracy.

Be carefull when you reach around 44.5 grns or higher, some of the loads listed here are individual pet loads which are hopefully safe in their gun, this does not mean it will be safe in yours.

It would be a big coincidence that loads that are on or near the maximium pressure for the gun will be the most accurate. Most target rifle shooters settle on around 44.5 grns with a 155 grn bullet, the need to have screaming hot loads is more to do with fashion than logic and will significantly reduce barrel life.

I would stick with N140 or N150 and stay away from the double base N540 and N550.

The need to have screaming hot loads is a need to have the edge over your competitor in an F or F/TR comp...apparently

Personally I will be sticking to N140 and have a longer lasting barrel...and keep my eye on the wind Jock
