This might be a bit of a nerd question but does anyone know how far a .177 pellet in a uk legal rifle would travel if fired at the optimum angle(roughly). Cheers people....

According to Chairgun, from a height of 5 feet at 11.45 ft/lbs, 7.9 grn pellet, and an angle of 75 degrees, 238 yards.
At 5 degrees 138 yards.
Not very good at sums, so I might have cocked this up

More interesting is that at 200 yds a .177 pellet fired from a 12ft lb rifle can go through both sides of a tin can
Maximum range is 446 yards, so the rough guide of "about 450 yards" is bang on.
Optimum angle: 23 degrees
Retained energy when it lands about 1/4 of a mile away will be about 0.3 foot pounds.

Once you get beyond about 140yards/metres, JSB Exact Heavies will be flying better and higher than exacts.
My software is called ChairGun, not ChairArtillery and will only give range up to 300m. The angles and corrections it showsare not intuitive to artillery calcs, so may be misleading
At 300m, shooting at an angle (incline) of 45deg, the pellet will have only dropped 17 metres from the line of sight. The pellet will still be travelling at over 60m/s
about a third of that velocity will still be vectored up (It will still be going up at about 20m/s).
Newton told us that something going up at 20m/s will stop going up after 2 seconds during which time it will have gone up another 20 metres. Bringing us to an altitude of 303metres. At this point it will have travelled another 75 metres downrange =375metres.
It's all downhill from here.
Looking at the third 100metres on the Chairgun table, the pellet was losing 25% of its (horizontal) velocity every second.
I remember from childhood that it would take about 10 secs to freefall from the top of The Empire State Building which is about 1000' which is about 300m.
So during each of those 10 secs it will go downrange a further:
1. 35metres
2. 26
3. 20
4. 15
5. 12
6. 9
7. 6
8. 4
9. 3
10. 2
Which is 132 metres.
Added to the 375 metres the pellet went on the way up, gives us a grand total of 507metres
I did say it's a wet day.

Terry Robb covers/tests this subject in one of his vids, the max was about 300 yards, IIRC.

My JSB heavy (BC=0.0310 at 722fps) calc was about right, though the angle wasn't!
