    Rifle Stand Advice.

I hope to shoot 10 meter rifle a little more often over the winter as a change from the 10 metre pistol shooting , and would like to buy a rifle stand so I am not holding the weight of the rifle for any longer than necessary ( getting older and weaker each year).

They are quite expensive to buy in the UK, so I would like some advice from regular 10 meter rifle shooters about which one works the best for them.

I fancied a blue MEC one - just because I liked the colour and I know the make, but it has been suggested that the TEC-HRO may be better and is about the same price.

What I really want the most from my rifle stand ( I think) is stability as I would hate to spend all that cash to find I had a flimsy or wobbly stand to balance my match rifle on - I want it to be solid and safe - and possibly blue!

Any advice from those with experience would be very helpful.

If its going to be for your 603 Bob,I think a stand will be more of a hinderence than a help, due to the cocking procedure.

I will use the stand inbetween shots - and I can see what you mean about the 603.

What I did not tell you is that I have a Walther Anatomical ( the one with the bue wood stock) and that is the one I will be using the most with a stand if I get into serious 10 meter shooting - well as serious as I am prepared to go with it ( if you know what I mean!).

Just a thought bob.....would a good old solid camera tripod do the job for you? even if you had to do small mods to suit.
If so then you can pick them up very cheap in the second hand and charity shops.

Camera tripods tend not to be sufficiently sturdy and take up too much floor space. If you want a cheap and serviceable alternative to the purpose built stand then with a little modification these work well. You can use the spare bits to improve the target lighting as well!

4.5 - is that all my Anatomical puts out?

Not that it matters much as long as it puts the holes in the right place on the target I suppose.

I guess you have had a little twiddle with yours then eh?

Anyway - anbody know anything about the TEC-RHO stand........it it as good as the MEC stand.......better maybe?

I have turned mine down as I found it groups better at the lower velocity.I think there may be something in the theory I heard recently off a very good pistol shooter that flat nose pellets don't like travelling to quickly.

If dedicated rifle stands are silly money, look at these:-
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Konig-SAT-TR...5206169&sr=8-1

I just bought one for my travelling satellite dish. It's solidly made of aluminium and the legs spread very wide for excellent stability. It wouldn't take much work to extend the vertical post and put a platform/shelf/stirrup on the top. It folds down to approx 5" x 5" x 36"
    Walther CP-2 Match, FAS 604 & Tau 7 target pistols, Smith & Wesson 6" & 4" co2 pistol, Crosman 1377,
Baikal IZH 53 pistol, Gamo CFX Royal,177, Umarex SA-10 CO2 pistol.

If you want to try a cheaper alternative have a look on the Wickes website. They do a light stand for building sites that can be easily converted to a quite decent rifle stand wIth an easily made wooden top.

From memory it cost £29.99 and works really well - and you and up with a 'free' light as well !!
I will try and email you some pictures later.

I got an MEC stand for my Birthday - but it is NOT an MEC stand.

My wife bought me a rifle stand for my birthday yesterday.

She ordered a blue MEC one ( so I must have been on my best behaviour in the weeks prior to the big event) but what was delivered was most definately nothing like a genuine MEC rifle stand.

The stand arrived in a cardboard box with the Hull Cartidge Company stamp on it - although this may well not have been its original packaging, and the three folding legs were indeed painted blue - as was the pellet holding tray.

The top of the stand post had a sqaure plate on top that swived and had signs of plenty of Evostick being used to fix a piece of rubber to the plate!

The screws that fastened the legs to the stand, and the two telescopic sections in position chew into the soft alloy tubes, and previous marks suggest this particluar stand had seen some use already!

Although my wife is not a rifle shooter - she could see ( with horror) as I unpacked my present that it was nothing like the MEC stand she had ordered and was more upset about it than I was.

The stand looks "cheap" and is not exactly very stable when put into the standing position. The pellet tray had a bolt sticking out of the side into space that has no obvious use - although by reversing it so it pointed inwards perhaps it could be used to secure something to the rear part of the tray behind the pellet tray itself?

This was bought from an established UK specialist dealer who had already confirmed ( by email) that he did have a genuine blue coloured MEC stand available from stock before my wife ordered it and paid him for it. I will not name the dealer as he may well have made a packing error and sent the wrong item by mistake - but is was a very dissapointing start to the day.

Just for curiosity I would like to see if I can find out if the Hull Cartride Company do make a cheap ( presumably Chinese made) rifle stand, and if the price is OK then maybe the stand is a reasonable buy - but one thing is for sure - I cannot see a German company like MEC putting their name to this one!

MEC make three stands, and this is not any of them! I know you wanted the top spec MEC Stativ part number MEC 280, the next one is the MEC Spider MEC 281, (it has strange spider type feet!) and the Tripod Club MEC 282.
The cheapest the club is 129 Euros and looks quite good, I've seen all of them and they are all stable and well made.
I'll send you a MEC catalogue, I picked up a handfull when we were there!

Looks like a Tec-Rho stand to me but stand to be corrected. Lighter than the MEC versions. None of the stands are very stable really unless clamped to the shooting bench/table.
IF IT'S NOT BROKE.........DON'T FIX IT!
