The bullets are the same for both rounds (.357) as is the case diameter its only the case length thats different, 38 special cases are shorter. So if you buy a 38 special revolver it will only fire 38s because the cylinder is the same length as a 38 round, but if you buy a .357 Magnum revolver it will shoot 38 rounds and .357 Magnum rounds because the cylinder is longer to to take the .357 Magnum round. This also works as a safety feature becase if you accidentaly put a .357 Magnum in a 38 revolver you can't close the cylinder as the round is slightly too long.
