Looks like a Rhino 1 piece mount to me. It must be a later non AO one as the ones I remember were gloss black. I only had optima 4x32's but on mine the turret saddle did not go all around the tube like yours, it sat on top like on Bushnell Trophies. In keeping with the 80, hope you enjoy it.

I think this must be a very late one - 1990s? When did the OPTIMA name dissapear?

The trade name 'OPTIMA' was purchased by Target Sports of Halliwell Road, Bolton in the late 90's (?). For a while they continued to import Hakko scopes under the brand name of Optima. These included 2-7 and a 6-24 spec models. (Ive a couple knocking around somewhere and will double check the spec). They were advertised in AGW/Airgunner for a while (dates?).

S'not a Rhino. Well, not like the one advertised in several copies of AGW from 1980.

I'm going to say it might be made by Hilver (whom I know for a fact made some mounts that were boxed and branded by Tasco).

    Although it probably isn't

The base fits to the dovetail using 2 rows of allen head screws

One row us used to narow the gap in the normal way but it does not ever get fully tight on the rail

There is then another row of allen key screws but these are grubs with screw in at the top edge of the side piece bearing on the opposite internal surface and so kind-a forcing the base of the dovetail todether - slightly odd

The rings attach from one side of the mount and there are 3 thin steel shims between each mount point so you can make sure that the scope is dead-centre above the barrel.

I recently bought a box of scope mounts and bits and bobs and in the box were 6 of these exact same shims which I looked at and though "what the hell are they?" Now I have this scope and mount I know exactly what they are from

That still does not help us to ID the mount though I do realise

I too thought it might be a Hillver mount. Had a good look on the net though, and found nothing like it .

The Rhino mount in the old AGW mags had a base much like the Apel jobbie's.

    Someone somewhere must know.

Anyone got a ouija board? We could ask the man himself.

Yes, particularly interesting that it's apparently the same mount as used by the late J.D. himself!

With the eye of faith - going by the shape of the top straps - it could be genuine Millet or Weaver... Leupold or Burris! A 'quality' maker like that is my guess!

    Looks quality for sure.

It is without doubt the same as the one JD had on his Venom 80, same scope too.

Well you know I have this kind-a feeling in my waters ( ) that this is the very scope and mount once owned by the great man...

Don't ask me why I think that...

...Oh OK it's called wishful thinking

    Well done Ian

I knew you could do it

A fairly pricey mount at the time - well the equivalent of 50 quid in todays money...

This scope and mount shall not be parting company
