    Bean bag filling

Can anyone please suggest something better than polystyrene beads for filling a bean bag? Apart from the exorbitant cost in hobby shops, they just don't feel firm if underfilled, and not compliant if tightly filled. I wouldn't mind a bit more weight, as its not something I want to cart around much, and I wouldn't mind a bit more solid feel.
While I am at it, does anyone know where you can buy smaller bags? Mine is about 20" by 16" maximum, and I wouldn't mind some thing a bit more compact. Thanks for any thoughts on this

Uncooked Rice or Barly ,split peas ,lentils etc, etc.Look at any of the online shops and they have bench rest shooting bags front and rear or small window bags. You can even use small pebbles such as those sold for fish tanks, just not too fine as that defeats the purpose, as it will compact and be solid feeling. You are after something about the size of pea gravel

    Filling

I find that crushed walnut shell is best but where to buy it in small quantities I know not.

Have a look at the FT Kneeler for a smaller bag:

Try mixing beads 50:50 with the chipped polystyrene packaging you get in boxes: it reduces the amount of beads you need and gives the bag a bit more substance.

I use uncooked rice as well, whatever you do make sure not to use silver sand (recommended to me by an rfd) it will weigh far too much.

    Pidgeon mix

Pidgeon mix from the petfood shop, - doesn't adsorb moisture and isn't too heavy to carry. Disposal is easy too....!!

    I have the correct answer

Granulated cork is the best bar none. Get the 2-3mm size and fill a little less than full. Before you sit just stomp a furrow across the cushion. Very firm and stable as well as being a little heavy. Feels like you're sitting in the top of a bucket.

Dried malted barley. They smell lovely and if you fit a zip they are great to nibble on.

Terrific response, thanks very much. Plenty to play with there. Whether it will improve my shooting though ....?

The next time I need to fill mine I'm off to that Teddy Bear Factory, whatever it's called, and get them to fill it with their machine.

    Shouldn't cost much.

    Kind regards,

    Phil
