Hi all
I have been given a rather nice BSA Meteor, this is in very good condition and has it's original box etc. However it doesn't work, when you break the barrel the spring is not compressing. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be please.
I will be looking to sell the gun but I would like to see the old girl working first but by looking at the pictures could anyone tell me what Mk the gun is and what sort of age it is. Also do you have a rough idea of the value of this gun as I suspect it isn't high.
Many thanks
Andy

sounds like the cocking link arm is broke or not being in the cocking slot, remove the stock and see if the arm is inside the maincylinder and contacting the piston.
looks like a mk3 with a 1 piece cocking arm
SAY HELLO TO MY SPRING POWERED FRIEND! BOING!
Going BY THE TAG ITS A MK5
Thanks chaps![]()
So is it a Mk 3 or 5. How can you tell from the tag, what am I looking for (am I being a bit thick?).
Mk3 Super Meteor (1974-78) IMO...
i thought that but if you take a look at the pics the stock has a long cocking slot and only mk1-3 have long slots.
just had a thought, think it's a mk5 in a mk3 stock so the articulated cocking arm won't work correctly.
that might explain why it has a supermeteor stock on it too
can we have a couple of pics of the underside please

SAY HELLO TO MY SPRING POWERED FRIEND! BOING!
yes your tag said tg its a mk3 super meteor am a bit confused now, but i think Dean might be right here.

The TG serial # prefix denotes the model and year. (Knibbs' list)
It looks like a Super Meteor rather than the standard model (different stock + it wears a recoil pad) hence why I suggested MkIII. HTH
Going off Nibbs numbers and the long cocking slot, in the stock, it appears to be a mk 4. When you say the spring is not compressing, do you mean that it is not compressing at all with no tension or just that the spring compresses but the trigger does not engage?
If it did have a mk5 cocking arm as shown in the diagram here http://gunspares.co.uk/shopdisplaypr...=24702&cat=Mk5
then the arm would not push against the spring much as the join in the arm would flip as soon as a bit of pressure was applied.
Heres the mk 4 to compare http://gunspares.co.uk/shopdisplaypr...=24701&cat=Mk4
If the spring is not compressing at all then try cocking the gun with it upside down. If the tangs on the cocking arm are worn (or the bit of the piston that it pushes against) then the arm slides over the piston rather than pushing against it.
If the spring is actually compressing but the trigger is not engaging, take the action out of the stock and try to adjust the trigger screw by turning half a turn at a time as it may have been wound too far in or out. If you take the action out of the stock, it is best to put some tape round the trigger housing to stop the pins falling out.
With the one piece cocking arm set up you can attempt to cock the gun and if it cocks (still hold barrel and cylinder firmly) pull the trigger with your little finger.
If none of this works then post again and I,ll tell you what to look for next.
I hope this is of some use.

Hi Chaps
Thanks for the fantastic help here.
I will take some pictures of the underside for you and post them later.
I can confirm that the rifle is exactly as it came out of the shop. I work with the guy that gave me the rifle, he found it in the back of his dads shed and can remember his dad taking him to the shop to buy it for him and yes it would have been in the 70's. I spoke to him the other day and he said that as far as he can remember it got dirty at least 15 years ago and was taken out of the stock to clean and it has never had anything done to it inside or out.
Will try cocking it upside down in the morning and get back to you.
Thanks again
Andy
Sorry I forgot to say that on closer inspection the TG number is also stamped on the cocking arm.
The spring is not compressing at all so i'll try cocking it upside down later.
Andy
You say it got dirty at least 15 years ago and was taken out of the stock to clean and it has never had anything done to it inside or out.
If you can get a photo of the trigger unit with the stock off one of us may be able to see if a pin has fell out when it was cleaned..........
How is this going on? I always like to know what was wrong with the guns.![]()

Hi Mate
Sorry, i meant to keep you informed. I think i have found the problem, the trigger mechanism is rusty. the spring was compressedand made me bloody jump when it went off. Gave it a quick clean and having no problems now. when i get chance later this week i will give it a proper clean and take it to our club and try it out.
Regards
Andy
