    routine maintenance

New to pistols and want to look after my new purchase. What's the best practice to look after my smith and Wesson 586?

Wipe it down with VP90 now and again.
Apply light machine oil sparingly to the moving parts.

My smith gets used pretty hard (IPAS), but after lubing and polishing the internals the maintenance is very minimal. Every now and again a CO2 caplet with a drop of oil on the end, but really they do not need oil dripping on them all the time.
They do benefit from a strip, polish and lube though, like most of the umarex pistols. After that you can leave it for quite a while.
    Good deals with these members

If you are going to keep it in its foam lined box wrap it up to avoid the finish discolouring.
Oil and foam can cause marks.
The surface of the pistol needs to be kept clean rather than oiled as it is not blued.
Silicone cloth or VP as Bob says.

They dont need much maintenance as you can see from the handbook.
Keep gun /household oil away from the valve. Put Pellgun oil on the tip of a co2 capsule now and again.

Probably best to avoid Crosman capsules as they have oil in them which I dont think is needed in these guns. Ok as an alternative to the Pellgun oil.

Another option is the Walther cleaning capsule which you can use at long intervals.
Messy but can work wonders on a tired Umarex.
Dont use indoors unless you want an oily room!

Looked after your pistol should be fine for a few years.

Thanks as well, I'm thinking about ditching the foam and making a better box for mine.
