Felt and making your own wads

Thanks members I have my set of punches and a 7/16 punch looks about right for .44 cylinder so which way do I punch felt through is it fury side up or flat side up and what do I use as a backing if hard wood what's it's name I did have a go last night disaster the punch went through felt and wood which was soft wood
So what and how do other members make there own wads
My felt is 3mm thick so is it ok if wad is to be thicker to use two of these this would give me 6mm

Use a slab of hardwood or lead as backing.
Learn not to hit punch too hard. (Sounds like you're some sort of heavy-handed Matelot!)
3mm sounds enough for me; I don't see the need for any thicker.

Careful that your felt is wool and not manmade substance, burn a scrap bit you can smell the difference.

I use a value tesco kitchen chopping board, sort of white nylon.

Yes sorry about that it's about the same both sides I did manage to bang a few out last night and they are a very snug fit exactly the same as shop fit so punch is ok thanks for telling me what you use all interesting stuff and filed away for later use thanks from Frank

I always use a 1lb lee ingot as a back stop for the punch. When it's looking a bit worn I turn it into bullets. As a retired crab fairy I probably have a gentler touch though!

I'll give it a go mate it's been a few weeks and yes finally got the hang of it more of a sharp solid tap then a bang the lead idea worked also thick cork each I found gave and allowed punch straight through
Also I found a old woman's hat made of 100% wool for £1.00 in hart foundasion shop I did a check on it by fire yep wool and callibar read 3mm so worked out I'll get close to 1000 wads out of it what a find
As for Airy fairy/ crab fats or what ever/ Pongos/ Skates/ Booties/ we all done are time with each services nick names but when it comes down to the nitty gritty combined services something to be proud of and here we are again on a forum years later and still someone from Fleet Air Arm or RAF is helping me to achieve a goal just shows you once in always in for life thanks mate
