    OT: Any fisherman out there?

Does anybody on here go fishing at all? My little lad, who has just turned six, wants me to take him fishing. I have never been fishing in my life, so could do with some advice. For a start what am I going to need, apart from a rod obviously, and is there a particular type of thing I should be looking for. I don't suppose there's an Idiots Guide to Fishing is there?

    Thanks, Anthony.
In the beginning there was nothing, and it blew up.

Get a cheap pole and reel, couple of bobbers, small lead weights and some crickets or worms. Do you have sunfish? If yes then you both will have a great time. Perhaps carp, y'all seem to have made an art out of catching them. If nothing else keep it simple and Take your kid fishing and hunting as often as possible now and you wont be fishin and huntin for him later.

Go to Used Tackle at Hucknall and you will get yourself everything you need for a few quid, they will advise on what you need and they are VERY reasonable for prices, despite the name the tackle that they sell is new

Depends on what you want to fish for but im guessing it will just be general course fishing (roach rudd pearch etc) in which case you want a 12-13ft match or float rod , some size 16 hooks barbless tend to be best especialy if your just starting out and some 4lb line, maxima is good stuff oh and also some shot to sercure the float and sink the bait
Although if he's only small he may have a bit of trouble casting a rod so another option could be a whip nothing more simple you just tie a lengh of line about a foot shorter than the total lengh of the whip to the end slide on a float and shot then tie the hook on

these are pretty much the lowest prices you can get on gear

Get yorself down to the local tackle shop & buy him the best beginners pole outfit you can afford, then take him to a heavily stocked carp "puddle".
The idea is he will have a fish a chuck, and hell be hooked for life, just as I was when me dear old grandad took me.

Am suprised no one has mentioned a landing net yet????

I would highly recomend a Whip as others have mentioned but buy the Whip with the facility for rubbers they can make all the difference if you hook a nice quality fish. You may also want to buy an unhooking glove OR mat depending on what species you are fishing for. If you are BOTH beginers i recomend you do NOT go for pike or zander as these fish can cause some serious injuries if handled incorrectly. Course fishing for the likes of Roach-rudd-perch-gudgeon-dace-bream etc is a very relaxing sport if you want something more exhilerating then try going for Chubb. A lot more mental and physical work needed for that.

I would ask you to perhaps Buy a book on fishing as they have a lot of good tips on tackle and fishing techniques etc. Also there are fish that need to be handled very carefully like Tench as if they are man handled or handled incorrectly they may suffer or even die. Luckily i have not caught many and the ones i HAVE were all lip hooked and was a quick flick of the hook with a set of Forceps while the fish was still in the water to make it as quick and hassle free as possible for the fish.

Once you get the hang of it you will find it is a VERY rewarding sport.

Oh One last thing. Take a pack of Wipes with you like baby wipes and make sure your Kid and yourself ALWAYS wipe your hands clean BEFORE eating anything like your dinner as there ARE toxins in the water that can cause severe stomach upsets and it would be a shame to spoil a nice days fishing for the sake of 30 seconds to clean your hands.

    Enjoy yourselves

Since you don't have a clue, ask ask round at work and you will find someone who does. They will be happy to take both of you out and show you both the ropes.

Don't try and do it yourself, it isn't something you can learn simply from books/magazines/newsgroups.

PS: Coarse fishing is all well and good but sea fishing is much better. Whats the point of throwing the fish back when you could be eating them instead ?

The 'point' is the enjoyment of catching them, Nathan. Putting them back means that others can enjoy that excitement, too.

I dunno, these young 'uns, eh?

I am an extreamely keen angler and specialist carper, and got into shooting through watching people during fishing....basic summery of what people of have said and what u need in my view! Like everyone has said, we presume you are going bit bashing, i.e fishin for whatever takes ur bait.

    1) Rod liscense - £23 (£2000 fine if caught without !! AND IT HAPPENS)
    2) Match Rod - Shakespeare 12foot - £35+
    3) Okumo Reel - £15
    4) Match Line - 5lb - £3
    5) Discorger!!!!!!!!!!! 30p
    6) Selection of floats - get some small ones as well - £4 (6pc)
6a) Float ?clips/rubbers? - like little rubbers u thread on the line then shove ur float in, means u can quickly clip in different floats
    7) Selection of weights -large to small + some spare dust weights £5
    8) Hooks To Nylon (Size 18 or 20) (someone said 16, to big in my opinion, i`ve had a 13lb carp on a size 20 hook(ps just an example i use size 6 hooks for carping!!))
    9) Landing Net - £15
    10) Pint of Maggots £2
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope that helps, if you get all that lot you`ll be set to go.

Run the line on the reel, (or ask the guy in the shop ur buying it all from to do it), put the reel on the rod, thread the line through all the eyes of the rod.
Thread on a float rubber/clip (as explained above), then tie on ur hook to nylon as shown on the back of the pack!!! Then u need to plumb the deapth of where you are fishing, (or lol if ur new, take a guess), set the deapth to the distance of the float to the hook. Put a weight on each side of the float to hold it in place, then dot some more weights (shirt button style - i.e evenly spaced for now) down the length, BUT not on the nylon of the hook link. CRITICAL - the add weights until just the SMALLEST TIP of the float is showing, there should be no more than 5mm of float showing (depending on the wind i.e and waves, so u can see it). Pop a maggot on the hook, hold the blunt end of the maggot and put the hook through the flap of skin at the blunt end. The maggot should not burst, if it does remove and try again. Chuck in, and when it goes under hit it and reel in!!

While ur fishing throw in 5 maggots every 2-3 minutes. Try fishing the margins at first, i.e not too for out so u can see whats happening. If u start introducing ground bait and a few maggots the bigger fish will come.

One point, please learn or ask in the shop how to use the discorger as you WILL need it.

Good luck, if u dont catch dont fret, most important thing is u both enjoy it.

Hope i`ve helped and haven`t just wittered on lol,

    Chris
