The 17 i think is .177 calibre hence the smaller pellet and so bigger mag next to a .22 calibre for example.

Unless I'm grossly mistaken, the "17" refers to the magazine capacity of the rifle in .177 calibre.

The Rapid 7 is a .22 calibre airgun that has a magazine capacity of 7 shots.

    Yep that's my understanding too.
    My Rapid 7 holds both a 7 and a 12 shot mag. The 17 is i think a .177 gun.

Yep the rapid 7 was the first type of rapid with the 7 shot .22 mag before they developed the 12 shot .22 mag
    .177 mag = 17 shots
    .20 mag = 12 shots
    .22 mags = 7 and now 12 shot mags
    .25 mag = 12 shots

    I've got a couple of 7 shot .177 mags (converted SLR .177 mags )

Yep... According to a Theoben history page I been reading - they didn't make an official .177 Rapid until the 17/17 models came out in April 1997.

Yep they didn't make Rapids in any other calibre than .22 until they designed the larger capacity different calibre magazines...

From another document I've been reading: These are the Rapid serials beginning in April 1997:

    003816
    003933
    005305
    005427

So whichever of those are .177 Rapids, them are probably the earliest ones

I have one of the REALLY early ones, with the gamo trigger and it's still running perfect. I did change the stock on it as i am a lefty but the internals etc are as it was made.
Still pellet on pellet too right out to 70 plus yards.

    changed the bolt too.

If yours is an early .177 (and if it's not too boring a question), I wonder what your serial number is? And how it compares to the Theoben production list
