    V-Max tips.

Has anyone any idea as to the results of pulling out the plastic tip of a V-Max bullet and using it as a hollow point?

Why on earth would you do that?

Surely you'd be better off buying a hollow point at 2/3rd the price per 100 particularly when the V-max are so hard to get hold of at the moment! The tip is there to give you a spitzer shape and the associated benefit of higher BC with the expansion (or better) of a hollow point.

I'd imagine youd damage the bullet in the process enough to affect accuracy too.

I thought of loading a bullet in the wrong way round and then firing it to see if it blew the barrel up.

I had a bullet seater grab a Vmax tip and pull it off (bad profile in seater plug, it was bearing on the tip instead of the ogive). I pulled off the others in the batch of 10 and tried them. No obvious effect on ballistics, suspect the main effect of the plug (other than "look pretty/streamlined") is to protect the delicate tip from handling.

As I recall, Bruce Potts did this years ago in "Shooting Sports", I think he used a ballistic tip and was running them as subsonics

Yes he did, in .308 and got pretty good 100 yard accuracy from them. He later moved on to the purpose-made Lapua subsonic bullets.

    Vmax

If you did remove the tip and it was easy enough to do it would be interesting to see what sort of fps
It would produce weighing a few grains less ??

The only point in removing the tip would be to reduce the length of the cartridge so it will fit in the magazine of my CZ 527. I've tried snipping half of the plastic tip off and that worked with no apparent ill effects.

I did three and shot them today, they held together fine and went through one hole at 75 yards.
