Best route for putting a barrel shroud on a HW99?

    Where can one be sourced?

Should aluminium be considered as an alternative to steel?

What sort of weight and length should I be thinking of?

If blanking the rear screw holes with a piece of metal with countersunk holes, is there still the same problem about getting screws with the correct size thread, or are these easier to source than grub screws?

    I would appreciate your advice.

Got mine from bigtoe, file off the fore sight grooves and it slips on. Held in place with loctite. Mine is full length plus about 40mm which acts as a bit of a mod as curler baffles can be fitted, and the blueing is spot on.

    Thanks Paul.

What did you do about the rear sight screw holes?

    Arthur,

Re the rear sight screw holes; you have options....

Years ago when having Venom tunes performed, Ivan and Dave fitted near little blanking screws into them.
I'm sure that Steve Pope of V-Mach could supply some?

    Maybe other knowledgeable airgunsmith?

Someone on here will know what size grub screw will be required.

And there was a tip on here recently employing the little plastic retainers from scope caps which employ stretchy elastic. Might have been IJ? Removing the nipple-like thingies (obviously technical term!) and fitting them into the holes.

I think Mick, T20, has also used / endorsed that method?

    Sugru

For plugging small screwholes neatly get some black Sugru.

Magic material, I have used it to build up grips on stocks as well. Great for small jobs but too expensive for large pieces.

Have you considered carbon fire tube, if the barrel is 16mm diameter the size is available.
    Don’t confuse luck with ability.

Arthur I would have thought the rear sight fixing screws were standard metric thread and if you want grub screws as opposed to ordinary pan head screws you can get them from www.modelfixings.co.uk,they do all sizes in all lengths in various threads.

That would take all the fun out of it.

    Thanks again for the replies.

Putting Sugru in I understand. How do you take it out?

Not had to take it out yet!

But it is a rubber type material and the tip of a scriber or such like should hook it out.

As I have a Bigtoe sleeve on my 99 barrel the open sights will never be fitted again, so removal of the plugs was not a consideration for me.

Thanks Patrick, but I started a thread about those grub screws some time ago.

Apparently they are anything but standard.

Very difficult to get them in the UK with the correct thread pitch.

Maybe an opening in the market for some enterprising 'smith to do a blanking plate, affixed with the correct thread screws? Blued or anodised blue/black finish?

    High time Tony.

And it's also about time someone provided a decent custom stock for the 99. The gun sells well, and I'm sure there'd be a market for it.

The best looking ones I've seen are done by an American bloke. Very expensive though.
