    Shy Weihrauch EL 54 Barakuda

Hi, as I am new to the forum, I would say "hello" to all.

As my first post, I would like to present one of my "shy" guns: Weihrauch HW 35 (the barrell is from a HW 35) with ether-injection system. The first ones are presented in 1954. More informations you find at www.
She is probably not all original , because of the caliber 4,5 (usually it is 5,5 mm). (The overall condition is good - sights are missing)

    Here some pictures:

    Hi Jochen

Thanks for those excellent pics of a scarce air rifle - especially here in the UK because it is firearms-rated, so not generally open to possession by people without the relevant certificate.

Here are pics of the original capsules of ether sold to accelerate the pellets shot from the Barakuda (courtesy of Frakor):

Aaaah - the one HW35 that I would love in my collection but I am not prepared to go down the FAC route just for one rifle that I would probably never use. A good start to the year. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Airs...ml?sort=6&o=54

Thank you for the photos and welcome aboard.

I knew about the capsules, but (as far as I know) you can use engine-start-spray.
I still do not understand the meaning of the two drilled holes in the chamber/system. The distances fom the port (red line) are 98 mm (3.86 ")and 195 mm ( 7.68").
Even with these drilled holes you can shoot ......Anyone has an idea?????

    Barakuda

    Hello Jochen,

The only use of these wholes is to lubricate the innards.AFAIK

    I have a HW35 Barakuda? in 4,5mm too.
    Just read this: http://www.network54.com/Forum/40594...ge/1249812125/

I seem to remember that Original tried ether injection in one of their break barrel rifles (model 35?).

    Nice

I remember reading a little on this rifle years ago as a teenager.
Either must be I guess very explosive .
Looks a beautiful air rifle I must say very different in the way it produces its power.
Do these have to be used with a excellerant ?.

I wonder how it's internals stand up as you read how dieseling can blow seal ,bulge cylinders and break springs.

What kind of velocities did these produce ?.

surely this must have been the most powerful airgun in the day .

What a cracker . In every way

Further to thus I just read a cracking piece from pyramid air on this rifle.
Answered pretty much all my questions .
    Still looks a cracker .
Thank you for sharing your images .

    The results of a test (VISIER 10) in 1993 : with 21,5 (!!) grains they measured 140 m/s = 460 fps and with 14,5 grains 173 m/s (570 fps).

And: Yes, it shoots well without ether.

PS: the inner parts of the tank-system:

The Barakuda was certainly innovative but I don't think using ether as an accelerant produced very consistent results, and as we know, consistency is what you need for predictable airgun accuracy.

Some interesting detail on how the Barakuda was used HERE (scroll down past the pics) - and remember it was written by someone who was selling the Barakuda at the time...

    Thank you garvin.
I had no idea the HW 35 goes back to 1951 .
    That has amazed me.

Must have been very exciting time for the designe team back then.

One of the reasons why I love the '35. Its like driving a 1950s car on todays roads and still being safe and keeping up with traffic.

Smiths Gas, Spring and Air did a test of a Barracuda. The m.e varied slightly ( H & N ball):

    shot (1) 480 fps, (2) 550 (3) 450 (4) 470 (5) 570 (6) 480
