    Enamel paint durability

I'm starting work on my battered LP53 in earnest. I've given it a blow over with some spray matt black enamel paint and it looks pretty good. Has anyone got any experience of whether this will work in the long run, or will it all just fall off? I prepped the surface with wire wool first.

I thort u was doing it with crackle paint? I don't think you can paint over spray enamel (soft as fouk), so you might have to fetch it all back orf.

The crackle finish was introduced quite a bit after this was made (1956) so I'm trying to keep it kinda right looking.

How much do you want for that HW35 rear sight?

OIC, etch primer followed by satin black car paint? Baked in a warm oven? But when I did that with some motorbike parts, for some reason my pies tasted wierd for weeks afterwards...

Oh yes, I will look out my bag 'o sights. No charge. Just make me a titanium target pistol on yer new lathe.

I think the parts are made of some easily castable alloy which probably won't anodise very well either.

Probably some baked on paint is the way to go.

I've snuck the parts into the oven on a very low 80c. Is that enough? Should i turn it up? How long should i leave it? Pie?

I dunno if you can bake that spray enamel stuff, although I have heard of baked Alaska, so it might be OK...

90 minutes at 80 degrees would be a complete guess. Then allow to cool before serving.

Does Karen know what you're up to in the oven??

Unlike cakes if you stab it with a fork and it sticks in you've left it a bit too long.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful, Mick

I've been looking into this for a Mercury refurb, BSA used stove enamelling originally.
It's amazing how many heat cured paints there are when you start looking, I've considerd BBQ paint & exhaust paint, but they don't do many gloss finishes. I've virtually settled on engine paint - for cylinder blocks. Available in a range of colours, if I wanted to paint my gun in Morris A series snot green...

When I've got around to it I'll make a report on how good it is.

I've used enamel in the past, as noted it's fine to look at but very fragile if you want to use the thing.
