    Cast Hornet bullets.

    I'm all excited ! My box of first cast Hornet bullets has arrived ! Dinky little things. All I need to do now is work out how much powder to put under them.

    After seeing the size of them I'm having second thoughts about casting my own.

    don't think you can just use lead as to soft and melting point is to low even with gas checks ,cant remember the name of it but was used in printing (old type) antiomony or something like that

    Linotype - NOT needed unless you want them going at 3000fps!
    Most range lead is ok especially where underlever rifles have been spitting out those GM (TOO)hardcast boolits and .22 lead is mixed in.
    Use GOOD lube (White Lable Carnauba Red is ideal) and gas checks. Don't size too small - .001 or .002 thou oversize (inches) is fine.

    The brand is "Trueflight", made in Birmingham. 40gr., ready lubed and gas checks fitted.

    angybear - if you could look up a couple of loads for me I'd be grateful. I have Lilgun and H110 powder at the moment, I've seen a load for Lilgun - 7.5gr. for regular velocities. I'm going to try and find some Red Dot or Green Dot tomorrow to load somewhat lighter (lower velocity).

    they look very much like the lyman 41gn (225438) loads given for that are;
    Red dot/700x 2gn to 3.8gn max,
    Green dot/PB 2.5gn to 4.3gn max,
    Unique/SR-7625 3gn to 4.7gn max

    Velocities from 1095 - 1875fps coal 1.675"

    sorry no load data for either of your powders with that bullet, but with a 49gn bullet it does give H-110 4.2gn to 6.5gn max with the other powders being much the same load as with 41gn.

    hope that helps.

    Hornet mould

    The lyman mould 225438 is a domed bullet at 44gn...the bullets in the pic look more like the NOE mould at 37gn..probably 40gn with a GC + lube. Will be interested to know how they shoot. The Lyman cast bullet book has some loads for 37/41/45 gn cast..Red Dot/Green Dot/Unique 2gns up to 4+gns.... I cannot find a current contact for Trueflight bullets, apparently the chap who made them has moved location recently.

    bear - I'm always cautious about what I stuff into a rifle cartridge case!

    angrybear - thanks for that, it ties in with what I had noted. I'll try and obtain Red or Green Dot. I won't even try H110 as I'm not keen on a load that has such a large amount of air space in the case, at 5gr. the case would not even be half full.
