    Webley service

    Hi there

Just thought, you don't see many webley mk2 service rifles for sale on here.

Suppose they are just too good to sell.

Oddly enough - looking for one was what fetched me on here in the first place and I got one within a week. Since then I've mentioned several times that I've got one for sale and not had a sniff - usually in the context of' 'I was going to take mine to Melbourne Marksmen's last do but thought it was too dear at £450 but there were 2 there at £650-ish'. It wouldn't be for sale but I've found an even nicer one to replace it.

I suspect everyone is really seeking the Holy Grail - the boxed set with 3 barrels. That's Deep Pockets Territory!

Good luck if you're looking, Mick

I'm in the process of getting funds together for one.

Dealers just want far too much for a one barrel service.

    There's a mk2 on Gunstar for £750

Spoke to the guy actually (about some other guns), seemed a decent chap.

    Hi mick,

The three barrel set is desirable as is just one .25 matching barrel to the action.

Just the .25 one would do me.

    Cheers

Personally , I don't think a genuine factory / cased Webley Service with three original serial numbered barrels exists. If It does , and I stand to be corrected , its probably in very low numbers , maybe single numbers.

The best I could manage is a correct 0.25 Service and barrel with Webley 0.177 and 0.22 barrels, in a Brady shotgun case.
Even finding a nice Brady case is pricey.

This is just my opinion , by the way.

Interesting thoughts Sam. Bearing in mind un-numbered Webley barrels could be bought new during the late 1930s, it may be possible for one barrel to be marked to an action, which is accompanied by 2 un-numbered barrels. This would still be correct of course. I recall seeing pics of original 'tiered' Webley cases in old Guns Review issues, which were 3 barrelled sets, so I'd like to think some exist. I'd like to examine such a set though.

For those after an example, there may be some coming up for auction this year. See the forthcoming issue of Airgun World for a taster.

According to Thrale's book .25 introduced April '37 as Rook & Rabbit Rifle around Serial S7000
Standard issue with single barrel. Could be ordered/supplied with other barrels.
Spare barrels also sold with no serial no. at £1.6s Very expensive at the time same as a new
    Webley pistol.

    Numbers

    Good morning,

My cased Webley is completely unnumbered. The barrels are .177 and .22.

Hi Jochen nice as it is your case is a shotgun case, but it still looks good with the service in it.

Webley cases for the Service and Senior air pistol were first advertised in 1938 and bearing in mind the .25 calibre option had only been introduced in 1937, as has already been pointed out, original factory sets were not around for long. I suspect some buyers would have opted for a 3 barrel set but these are going to be few and far between. Most cased sets encountered today are housed in converted shotgun cases.

Chris Thrale illustrates some original examples in his excellent book and it will be seen the layout is considerably different to most sets encountered today.
