......from a piston sleeve?
Or is one unnecessary?

I wish I was in the land of cotton.
I think if you send tinbum your spring, he will supply an individually fitted guide, top-hat and piston sleeve for £25 or £20 and a jar of Branston and a family pack of Kit Kat bars. That should stop it twanging and boinging like two skeletons 'at it hammer-and-tongs' on a old bedstead with no mattress.
I think if you do a search Tony has written plenty on how to optimise this near-optimal air-rifle.
It just needs a good fitting guide and tophat for the oem spring, polish the piston, add some good lube and shoot it.
Hit the agree button.
Never really been sure on fitting a piston sleeve to the HWs with the two piece cocking arm. Some say do it, others to leave alone, as it could potentially interfere with cocking horn location and become kinked, which wouldn't be conducive to a smooth operating gun.
One of my 99s has one, the other not.
