    .223 lead bullets load

Hi all, I have just borrowed a Lyman 55gn d/c mold and would like to know if anyone has a starting load for it. I would like it to be under 1000fps. I have GM3-Unique- Lill gun-Vectan AS and A1. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks. The mate I borrowed it from got it in a deal so has no idea as to loads. The rifle is a Howa 1500 with 1 in 12 twist and I would be shooting at 50 yds.

    Rem 223

My Lyman book has the following loads for 54gn cast bullet...nothing near subsonic...

    5.4 gns Red dot 1675fps
    6gns Green Dot 1735fps
    6.7gns Unique 1805fps

You would be looking at "mousefart loads" to get down to 1000fps...GM3 burns about the same as Green Dot...you would be looking at 3gns or so of fast pistol powder with a chance of getting one stuck in the barrel.
Lyman say best accuracy with cast at around 2000fps!

Thanks AMC577, the link was very interesting and I have also made a note of your charge weights etc. Once again, many thanks, Paul.

TB is a good powder to try, don't drop too low on charge weights or you will have hang fires, don't compress the loads or break the doughnuts as the pressure spikes very quickly.
I have messed about with this powder in three calibres and got good soft loads, but not the accuracy at subsonic speeds that were worth using.

GM3 is excellent for this work. The only load I have for such a low velocity is 2gg. of Bullseye for 1030 fps. This is with the 55 gr. Lee Bator bullet through my Savage M112. But I've never had good accuracy at these low speeds. 8 gr. of GM3 gives me 2509 fps and group's well under minute of angle.

Many thanks, I do have GM3. Over the next few weeks I will be trying out some of these loads.
