I'm just off for a pre debate garden plink
This is what we got devolution for - how does this pass for a debate? No reasoned argument and no publishing of "evidence" so far.
Your too far behind the curve Danny, that side of it was done and dusted some time ago. As I've said many times before, and is shown clearly in the submissions thus far, there's no show stopper coming from the opposition. Interestingly it's the new justice minister himself, the abstaining tories and Tavish Scott of the libdems, thus far who've talked sense.
Am I missing something, or did I just hear a member of the Scottish Parliament refer to the current licensing of rifles producing over 12ft/lbs and pistols producing over 6ft/lbs?.
I thought such pistols became section 5 and were therefore prohibited?,if found in possession, do not pass go,go straight to jail.
Perhaps but as this is a debate - it should be a reasoned argument for and against citing evidence gained during consultation period. Thats not what I saw with questions about lack of data for current year slapped down as an inconvenience and apparent lack of police support for the idea not brought up at all - cut and thrust was; We the SNP want to do this - we think its a good idea and no-one else really seems to care so we'll just to it and lump it in with under age drinking and lap-dancing (another two of my former pastimes).
Danny I've been following this closely for a long time, the bit where they shoot the shit arguing this point and that was at the committee stage. Thats not what this was about, this was the formal report of that committee to parliament.
The reason for lumping it in with scrap merchants, taxi/private hire, titty bar and other forms of licensing, was because they've identified licensing as being required in all those areas.
It was obvious to me from the responses from the Labour benches, that if labour had won the 2007 election we'd have been looking at a ban. The opposition? all supported the bill at the committee phase, all will vote with the government, except the Tories who've announced they'll abstain, a move away from their former committee position of support, indeed there was a smarmy comment to that effect from the floor, if you were listening you'd have heard it. Perhaps they didn't want to be seen as supporting it in the cold light of the debate, but an abstention is as good as wink to a blind man.
Disappointing, perhaps and a little weird, being lumped in with the titty bars, n' all. Lets hope the 2nd stage sees some of Cameron Buchanan and Tavish Scott's points being taken onboard.
