Ruger 77 357mag loads

Well I was going for one but the shop where I go she selling old ones that are
15years old for £900 not paying that for second hand one. Mates at the club
have some trouble one lads carrier broken and the other lads barrels got bulge
in is Marlin. The shops turned round and just said no parts for them so your
screwed
So I have Got the Ruger 77/357 and getting some 2" groups at 50M with it,
just using some light loads from my Rossi 92 that I loaded up. Very happy with
it cost me £800 and I got extra mag for £39. It is stiff change the mag but this
just down to it being new.
Was going to get a Henry Big Boy but there £900 and there no loading gate on them

Henry big boys are nice. I was lucky enough to pick my second hand one up for 400. Through my dad's mate. But I really like the look of the 77.

I bought a Marlin in 35 Rem two weeks ago - £450
I also bought a Winchester Legacy on Friday (,357) for £250

Been out again with today getting groups now at 1" at 50m so its getting better

Has anybody used GM Lead Bullets .358 148gr Wad Cutter. In this rifle dose it group and
load ok.

1" groups at 50m is something i dream about with my marlin.20y standing i can shoot the wings of a fly but at 50m the groups are more like 3-4"

My pal Ron in Oregon sold one newer than that last year for $150. Had a nice Simmons scope on it, too.

Well if you are using lead, any fast pistol powder, around 4-6grains behind 158grn lead will give aprox 900-1000fps.

around 17grains of medium/slow powder with a 125grain TMJ will give around 2000fps.

Warning, this works for me in a Rossi 92, YMMV !
Remember to work up to it & check the cases for pressure signs if you attempt these.
If you want something really pokey, then a 357 case, with a 90 or 95grn 9mm (.356) FMJ, with 18-22grains of medium/slow powder (AA#9, LilGun, 2400 etc) will net you 2200-2400fps. These shoot 3-4" groups @ 100yds with open sights, pity you can't use these for small deer

Just looked at the 77, its the same mid locking bolt, which is NOT really designed for high pressure, my 77/22M with reloads used to stretch the cases, but was a nice accurate gun. I do like the Ruger 77 especially the 3 way safety on the end of the bolt, pity they don't ugrade it to a front locking bolt.

So ya think ya Rossi 92 got stronger action than my 77 in 357mag

I was not stating that as fact but the 92 action is the stongest of the winchester type levers & will take 55Kpsi.
I've no idea what pressures the 77/357 will handle ! If the action is the same as the 77/308 then cool, but I've not researched it. If it is, then 308 is good for 62Kpsi, so could run a grain or two more or slower powder & use small rifle primers, if the firing pin win strike them hard enough to set them off. My Win9410 shotgun, whilst built on the rifle platform will NOT set off rifle primers, because the hammer spring is weaker so as not to puncture shotgun primer cups, which are large pistol primers in a cup!

The original 357 Magnum spec was 43.5Kpsi, but todays SAAMI spec is 35Kpsi, reduced in 1995 due to older handguns failing or shaking themselves to bits
Those pressures are safe in revolvers, but rifles can handle higher pressures, but there is no seperate spec due to the interchangeability of ammo !

I was just need some rounds to group well at 50m did not need 2000fps. its all gone tits
up. got some gm 125gr to try in and there going all over the place.
I order some 180gr to try.

say in my loading book lever guns where black powder gun, low end pressure, then you got bolt
guns medium pressure, then you got rifle falling block like the ruger no1 high pressure
