For general use it makes no difference.
The 40 will have a greater depth of field. (possibly less of an issue for AO)
The 50 will gather more light in low light conditions.

3-9x50
Which of the two would you prefer to use for general airgun use wether it be ao or none ao objective

Imo 50 is silly, its a bloody airgun less is more
I agree. I have one 50mm objective scope. I couldn't avoid it. I wanted a cheap scope in the 4-12x range, and many cheap scopes come with the larger objectives these days. It's a marketing thing.
It also has IR which I have no use for at all.
It's a bloody nuisance because then you need high mounts, and a gun can become unwieldy for no real advantage.

I wish I was in the land of cotton.
A 40 mm objective scope set at 6 mag with good optics will do the business when the light fades.

I have a few hawke panoramas with 40mm and 50mm and prefer the 40mm they look much better than the 50's mounted lower on the actions . Find the Pan's nice and clear and the half mildot ret is very good
A few nice rifles
Slightly off track but I have an Edgar Brothers Optimate 6x44 jap made scope on my hunting rig and would have a tendency to agree with you, yes it would be nice to have a bit more mag sometimes but then it stops you taking silly long shots.

Far too many rifles to list now, all mainly British but the odd pesky foreigner has snuck in
G'day all,
Have you read this article?

I decided that the biggest objective of any use to me would be 40mm, having read this, especially the section about "Exit Pupil".
It appears that bigger is not better in terms of light transmission to the eye - which is what counts.

- Smaller objective lens gives greater depth of field.
- For general airgun use 38-42mm objective is as much as you need.
- The MTC Connect scopes, however, have even smaller objective lenses for a (supposed) better depth of field however should not be used on springers, because they are likely to connect with your eye rather sharpish. Some people (me) struggle with the Connects primarily because they have very poor eyesight to begin with and struggle to resolve the reticle.
- I have tried over a dozen scopes, and still own at least half of them, my favourite happens to be the cheapest, the Nikko Stirling Gold Crown Air King 3-9x42 which is incredible value for money (from BAR), has bright clear glass, a Mil-dot reticle of reasonable size and a superb depth of field
