For general use it makes no difference.

The 40 will have a greater depth of field. (possibly less of an issue for AO)

The 50 will gather more light in low light conditions.

I agree. I have one 50mm objective scope. I couldn't avoid it. I wanted a cheap scope in the 4-12x range, and many cheap scopes come with the larger objectives these days. It's a marketing thing.

It also has IR which I have no use for at all.

It's a bloody nuisance because then you need high mounts, and a gun can become unwieldy for no real advantage.

^^^^Agreed. I bought one thinking it looked the business, then I found it just gets in the way. The main issue was that when the rifle was rested on it's side, it would actually be resting on the scope, which I did not like.

A 40 mm objective scope set at 6 mag with good optics will do the business when the light fades.

Slightly off track but I have an Edgar Brothers Optimate 6x44 jap made scope on my hunting rig and would have a tendency to agree with you, yes it would be nice to have a bit more mag sometimes but then it stops you taking silly long shots.

    40 or 50 mil objective

    G'day all,

    Have you read this article?

    http://www.chuckhawks.com/optical_sights.htm

I decided that the biggest objective of any use to me would be 40mm, having read this, especially the section about "Exit Pupil".

It appears that bigger is not better in terms of light transmission to the eye - which is what counts.

If to use your rifle, with your build, with the rifles stock you need a scope with xxxxx spec, buy that one
It's not what scope is best, it's the one that fits you on that outfit

    • Smaller objective lens gives greater depth of field.
    • For general airgun use 38-42mm objective is as much as you need.
    • The MTC Connect scopes, however, have even smaller objective lenses for a (supposed) better depth of field however should not be used on springers, because they are likely to connect with your eye rather sharpish. Some people (me) struggle with the Connects primarily because they have very poor eyesight to begin with and struggle to resolve the reticle.
    • I have tried over a dozen scopes, and still own at least half of them, my favourite happens to be the cheapest, the Nikko Stirling Gold Crown Air King 3-9x42 which is incredible value for money (from BAR), has bright clear glass, a Mil-dot reticle of reasonable size and a superb depth of field
