S&W 5/686 Co2 owners, pellet loading query

I have a question, but first want to say thanks guys, I don't often follow the air gun section, but thanks to all the comments in threads I've read and reviews on the web (they all tally), picking up my 586 6" barrel either Thurday or Friday from the NSRA shop at Bisley. Can't wait to try it at the club Saturday.

Q. Read one review and it suggests it is better to seat the pellets a bit into the mag, rather than leaving them flush at the rear. I actually have a little tool I can use that came with my Skif for doing that.

Seat or not to seat, that is the question?

hi mate,, yeah i say 100% properly seat rather then flush..

its the same with all the umarex pellet guns. not only does it help with trigger pull it also helps with shot consistency too..

heres a picture.. the magazine on the right has the pellets seated correctly.. (not the 686 mags but same principle)

Definitely seat. A Bic (TM!) Biro (TM!) on a table top does the business.

Apols for the (TM!)s, but i gather both Bic and Biro are incredibly militant about their brands and trademarks....

But, yes, seat them as deep as they will go. Otherwise they'll back out and jam the thing up.

If you don't have a Bic (TM) Biro (TM), an old matchstick, or the end of the corkscrew on a Swiss Army (TM) knife will do.

I actually have an adjustable depth pellet seating tool that came with my Skif 3000

Thats good you only need to push then about 1.5mm passed flush.

Never found it necessary on the 586 TBH. Thumb seating has worked for me every time. Hobby pellets can be tricky due to wide skirts but everything else fine.

For the CP88 et al, definitely seat them though.

I think it depends on the magazine.

I bought my 586 4" a couple of months ago, and at the same time I bought three spare mags. Inserting pellets into the mag which came with the gun, they go in firmly and stay there, but the three replacement mags are a different proposition - some of the pellet holes are loose enough that the pellets can fall out again when the mag is picked up and turned over.

I've found that pressing the pellets flush with the front of the mag, by placing the mag on a flat surface and pushing the pellets in as far as they will go with a nail or a biro, causes the skirt to engage on the walls of the chambers and keeps them in position better. I've never had a pellet come loose since...

Should prevent miss-fires too.
