    Trick shot

I have seen some hideously damaged chronoscopes land on my work bench over the years, but this one is especially weird

The pellet enters through the back of the case, removes 2 surface mount transistors with surgical precision, then disappears.

    Picture link

Usually when they go in through the back it is total destruction, delaminated PCB's, chips removed along with every connected track.

I thought maybe it had gone up the back of the board and got them with a shock wave, but there is no mark on the back.

New case, two transistors and it calibrates fine and dandy.

I don't know how he did it, but I have to say I am impressed

I'll suggest a low power pistol pellet, that went through the case & damaged the transistors which were then removed by the owner, or maybe the pellet was deflected out the side case but a replacement case has been fitted

You get all the fun jobs.

By the looks of it he must have shot through the mounting bracket too, so perhaps by then there wasn't a lot of pellet left

I really don't know how he did it. You can see the indents in the solder where the transistor legs used to be, you would think it would take one hell of a whack to knock them off without ripping the pads from the board. So how did the pellet get there and where did it go afterwards?

If you find out it was a standing shot, don't tell Harvey.......

Perhaps it was somebody testing a new class of low power gun that we don't know about yet? Like a phased plasma rifle in the 5W~10W range.

Such a weapon (on reflection, perhaps a pistol version?) could do the exact damage as described.

I shouldn't be at all surprised if that isn't exactly it.

Chances are the owner opened up the case and removed the pellet and the two transistors before putting it in for repair

Indubitably. Sometimes they leave me to prize out the lump of lead, sometimes they do it for me.

It doesn't matter, I have fixed so many I can do it in my sleep
