Recipes?
Who has a foolproof recipe for getting a nice colour on a stock when refinishing?
I do a few, mainly older weihrauch beech stock refurbishing, and can get close to the original with commercially available wood stains, usually a walnut stain, with tru oil finish and occasionally spray lacquer. I've not found the finish that I'm 100% happy with yet though.
Has anyone else cracked the perfect dye / finish combo to get a perfect finish?

same here.. although I have had decent results mixing colron solvent based stains into my clear varnish.. it does take quite a bit and a few coats to darken it up. I dont usually stain beech as I dont want to see the grains take up the colour at different rates.. I think it looks terrible.
Id like to have a nice big bucket of lovely dark brown varnish that I know I can just slap right onto a beech stock and it will come out factory colour.
I like some of the stuff Rothko and Frost have, but never tried it.
