Agree about the thumbwheel. I've got cheap ones that live in the workshop for rough work but they simply aren't as nice to use as the Mitutoyo as the display doesn't change instantly. Each to their own I suppose but if my best pair broke I wouldn't hesitate to replace them with another decent pair.
The other thing about cheap calipers, apart from not maintaining zero like the Mitutoyos is that the batteries don't last long.
