My spud gun was even cheaper. I bought it in Woolworths in the early 1960's for about 2/- (10p) I think.
The principle of operation was very simple - it was miniature revolver shaped and broke on a hinge pin. A small triangular shaped piercer was removed from the breech and pushed into a potato removing a small plug about 1/4" long. The piercer containing the potato plug was then inserted in the breech and an explosive cap (for toy cap guns) was hen placed on the flat anvil behind the piercer and the breech closed. The hammer was pulled back and when the trigger was pulled the cap exploded launching the spud missile along a 2" barrel.
Being hit with a spud missile at short range was quite painful although its maximum range was probably only 10 feet or so!
I was at college at the time and when word got around that Woolworths were stocking these miniature weapons we all bought one and had some memorable skirmishes between lectures. Health and Safety was not an issue then but these little weapons could be dangerous especially if a spud missile were to hit you in the eye. Happy days!
I came across it in the loft a few years ago and if I can find it I will post a pic.
