I have just signed, it took about 30 seconds, number 18,752, it was quicker than moaning about it (although I agree with the points made), I think it easier just to sign the thing. I can only just about shoot straight with lead pellets and a springer the mind boggles what it would be like with anything else.

What are the alternatives to lead for pellets? Presumably there is another metal that can be used, but are there cost implications on swapping?

Realistically, nothing is as effective or cheap. Shotgunners use steel (no way) or bismuth (brittle)

One important point that does not get mentioned is that lead is one of the best self lubricating metals. The alloy of barrels are designed with this in mind. It is possible to come up with another alloy for pellets/ bullets but the metallurgy of the barrels have to be changed to cope with the new metal. Lead is also extremely heavy so a small calibre round can carry a lot of energy. From what I have seen of these new lead free pellets it appears that they are very much on the lighter side by as much as 20% for the same size of the calibre.

Amac, on here did some tests with various none lead pellets last year i think. Don't think any where as good as lead but he's the guy for info.
