    Help

A few years ago I was reading a book on black powder muzzle loaders (think it was an old gun digest book) in this book there was an artical about a ball swaging kit, first you used the aluminium mold to cast lead rods, then usung a hole on the cylindrical 2 part steel die, you cut the rod in prices of the right length then place the bit of lead in the die then you hit it with a hammer, now you have a swagged ball + flashing, to remove the flashing you pushed the ball through a hole in the aluminium rod casting mold.
I have just asked the friend who's book it was to see if I could borrow this book but he sold it
Does any one know the name of this kit or have the artical in question they could copy for me? As I know some one who is interested in this kit, (explaining it is one thing but seeing pics of it is better)
Please, if you can help, this is driving me mad trying to remember the name of the kit as I remember searching for it on the net when I was reading the book but it was on a computer I no longer have.

What you are describing is what we call 'pound swagging/swaging'.

    http://www.corbins.com/bsk-1.htm [USA]

    http://www.preaccessories.com/load/b...aging-kit.html UK]

Any ideas which GD it was in? Mine go back to 1974 and it's not in any of them that I recall...

It's not a Corbin set (that much I can remember) the second link is nothing but molds, nothing to do with swaging
Sorry I don't know the book it was in other than it was a book about black powder

The Nalan swaging press is a UK made kit, using a lot of leverage rather than a hammer. Also it is fed with cut lead wire (but I suppose appropriately shaped cast lead ingots would work, provided that they were very soft lead).

I believe that the father has passed away and the son/daughter ran the business on for a while, but it seems to have faded away.

Not exactly a coincidence. This thread reminded me that my club had the kit but not the know-how so I thought I would ask.

NOW I remember seeing the father and son at a Trafalgar meeting a few years back. A very complex but very effective leverage system at about the tenth of the price of Dave Corbin's fancy hydraulic machne that my pals the Polisars use to make Whitworth bullets.

Rather than try to find ingots the right size look out for a full wadcutter bullet mould of the right size. A friend of mine used to swage his own design bullets and used the Lee tumblelube bullet as the swaging medium.

Without a doubt swaged bullets/balls will be more consistent than cast ones. Rather than use a hammer or a complex leverage system, invest in a small fly press. You will probably find one on fleabay.

In fact, if you have dies made up for the fly press you will not need any of the swaging machines that are/have been marketed.

Your mission, if you wish to except it, is to read all the black powder gun digest books you have with a glass or 3 of whiskey

    Cast vs swaged

I've noticed my cast balls to shoot as well as hornady or speer swaged.makes no sense but I'm not the only one I've heard with the same results.
