Unfortunately, I have had to resort to a "name and shame" regarding a recent deal on here. Not pleasant and since buying and selling thousands of pounds worth of kit on here, its my first deal that's gone sour.

Seller asked for payment via Paypal gift (I've since learnt the hard way that there is no comeback, and actually not allowed on the BBS for this very reason). I noticed it was fixed parallax, confirmed it with the seller and decided to mount it on my Dad's rimfire instead for his birthday.

Scope arrived and as soon as I took it out the box saw the gauge.

Politely contacted the seller with a photo showing the damage, and requested a refund if I could ship him back the scope at my expense. He refused stating it was in excellent "working condition". Sorry but - no dice. Apparently the damage wasn't noticed when he sent it (or worded the ad).

Maybe its just me but if I described something as excellent condition, it damn well would be, and if there was a problem with anything I sold on here - I'd do everything I could to resolve it. But I guess I regard my reputation is worth more than £130.

So, at the expense of me coming across as a whiner - don't ask to be paid by Paypal gift, and certainly do not pay with Paypal gift - as although everyone else I've dealt with on here with the dozens of trades completed over the past 16 years has been honest and up-front, there's always someone like the seller above that spoils things.

I would have expected that gouge to be mentioned, it's quite significant.

Shame about this, particularly as he could have accepted your offer and none of us would have been any the wiser....

Had I been the seller of this scope, I would have described and included a photograph of the scratch. I'm sure it won't affect the function of the scope but it certainly compromises its form.

A car paintwork touch up pen will sort it but the seller is definitely in the wrong on this one.

You can't describe a scope as being in "excellent condition" if it's scratched down to the metal.

Bad form, and I hope he doesn't get away with it.

Its a dam shame that you have been conned by someone on here with 1000+ posts they should know better

Hopefully the shame of this thread should make them reconsider sending you your money back

It takes a lifetime to earn respect and one bad turn to lose it,always treat others as you would like to be treated yourself 1000+ posts hold your head in shame treating a fellow BBS member like this

In fact the only thing you shod do is PayPal the money back and say keep the scope..even then your respect is gone

I've come to terms that I probably won't get a refund and will have to sort something else out - but it's the dishonesty that has galled me. If it had a gauge down to the metal tube, tell me - it's not like it wasn't noticeable. I would have asked for a photo and made a decision to buy it after looking at it. Describing something as excellent condition and insisting on a payment method where there's no comeback leads me to the only conclusion that this was intentional misdescription.

Maybe I was naive, maybe I deserved to get burnt by taking something at someones word. But describing something as "excellent condition" implies it is is excellent condition doesn't it? I understand it may mean different things to different people but surely it was worthy of a mention?

I don't like calling people out in public at any time, but I never thought I'd have to do it on here. I've met loads of great chaps off the BBS, always dealt with people honestly and have always been given the same courtesy. It's not a place where we rip each other off.

I wouldn't have the cheek to describe it as excellent condition and then send it to you with the scratch on it and then claim I didn't know it was there , really poor , however his behaviour regarding a refund is totally unacceptable and all for £130.
I'm sure though that other people will now be a little wary of doing a deal with him ,just unfortunately its yourself that has fallen fowl this time

I would not be happy for it to look like that out of the box, but having said that I doubt it will effect the scope view at all, so I'd ask for a £20 refund & give it a dab of motorbike engine paint to cover the mark.

As for PP as a gift, you can always add the 4% they charge & send it as a payment to cover yourself

Please note this is not a defence of the seller who is clearly in the wrong.

Bought a scope off the bbs a week or so ago. Seller put scope in poly bag in an old scope box. No packing what so ever! Luckily the scopes ok. Some people!

Ok, I've waited for enough people to read the post and add their comments before I replied, so here it is.

I did describe the scope as being in excellent condition, which in hindsight was incorrect in the cosmetic sense. But, the scope is in excellent working condition with no mechanical or optical (lens etc) faults.

There is a scratch on the ocular bell but it has no effect whatsoever on its performance and if cosmetic appearance was the most important factor to the buyer then he should have asked for pictures, which I'd have gladly supplied but he didn't.

I like the buyer have also bought and sold many items on here and other forums and never had any problems and regularly use paypal gift (as a buyer and seller) because neither side incurs any commission costs.

I wanted £140 for the scope and the buyer offered £120 so I agreed to sell it for £130 to include £10 RMSD so paying just over half the price of new (they're £225 new), for a quality scope in excellent working condition but with a cosmetic scratch on it, doesn't seem a bad deal to me.

That's my reply and I'm comfortable with it.
