    Question Beech wood off cuts

    Evening all
Any ideas where I could buy an off cut of beech wood?
I need to extend the rear end stock on my S410,approx 50mm.
    Thanks in advance

Just use 1/2" Aluminium rods to extend the butt. Make a butt plate from 8mm think aluminium to screw the butt Pad to. If you have a lathe you can even make the extension variable.

50mm is quite a lot, have you got really long arms?

Lots of furniture made out of beech, you might be able to pick up an old kitchen chair or something at the local sale rooms for a pound, or less.

It's not an easy job to make it look good too, apart from the mechanics of joining the extension to the old butt. For a start, the 400 series stocks, like many others, get deeper as you go further back, and if the extension carries on at the same taper then the butt plate will look too small.

On the other hand if you make the extension parallel so the butt plate will fit, it will always look like an awkward add-on.

A much bigger job is to refinish the underside of the butt, to make one flowing line, but that could involve a total refinish.

That's the best bet. I used 10mm stainless steel rods though.

The spacers in the photo I put up are cut from 16mm steel tube, and they conceal a plain woodscrew passing through the centre, holding the adjustable butt plate to the wooden stock. A length of tube can be had from B and Q for a couple of quid and you could make loads of spacers of varying lengths. I put a thin piece of sheet against the back of the stock to stop the tubes cutting into the wood and ending up loose.

That is a clever simple solution. I'll keep this one in mind.

    Thanks for sharing it!
