CZ527 22 Hornet - Bobsled/Single Shot Magazine

Got my CZ527 bobsled today for my 22 Hornet. Looks a decent, simple bit of kit. I can now load rounds longer than 1.730" which is max mag length for the standard mag.

Bought some 40gr V-Max and measured the cartridge length to the lands. Turned be 1.918". Loaded x20 40gr V-Max 10thou less using 12.4 - 13gr of Lil' Gun. Looking forward to seeing how they perform.

When I was last out testing loads I had decent results using the Hornet specific 40gr Sierra SP with 13gr of Lil Gun. Measured these to the lands and found that they touched at 1.800" so I loaded four rounds at 1.790" to see if i can improve on things.

With the 35gr V-Max I'm getting decent results with 12.5gr of Lil Gun with a COAL of 1.729" but I think I may be able to improve on this too. These touch the lands at 1.777" so I may experiment with OAL from 1.739" - 1.777" using the same powder charge and see how I get on.

I'm kind of hoping I can get a good load developed with the 40gr ammo, preferably the V-Max, due to the increase in BC. I find the 35gr V-Max get blown off course quite easily.

Just don't try it with hollow points they don't feed but excellent with poly tipped bullets which is the reason you bought it in the first place

The 40gr Sierra's didn't seem to work as well either. The roundnose tips kept catching between the feed ramp and the chamber due to the slightly loose fit of the bobsled.

I put a single piece of masking tape on the side of the bobsled to ever so slightly thicken the profile and it's now a nice snug fit and has stopped the Sierra's from clipping while loading

I've got some of this and initial results didn't look too promising but I'll probably still have a play at developing a load with them

OK, so tried out the 40gr V-Max tonight at 100 yards. They grouped at 0.6" using 12.4gr and then got progressively wider out to around 2" at 13gr. I was hoping for the opposite to be honest but nevermind.

I'll load some more rounds at a charge weight of 12.4 and 12.5gr and play a little further with seating depth from touching the lands down to max magazine length and see how I get on.

On a positive note, the 35gr V-Max with Federal primers seemed to perform quite well. One of the three shot groups measure 0.33" which isn't too shabby. Certainly capable of head shooting rabbits all day. Need to properly stretch the legs with these but it's the wind that tends to be the killer.

Yeah should be. I was having a chat with a chap on VKV who suggested I increase the load to find the second accuracy node.

Apparently he has the same rifle and it loves 40gr V-Max behind 13.4gr of Lil Gun using Winchester brass. Admittedly, this would fill the case and would be a compressed load but he doesn't feel this would be an issue with Lil Gun.

I'll creep the powder charge up and see how I get on. Wouldn't mind sourcing some Remington brass to make things easier

I've managed to find some lilgun not many shops round here have any! . And filled the case up. Compression load. 40vmax head. Coal 1.800 so just fit the ruger mags. And managed 3/4 inch at 115 yes. Not bad for these! When I got my ruger it was 4 to 5 inches at this range ..

Also try going the other way, with lighter loads. My 527 K Hornet likes the 40gn Seirra kept down around 2800fps 10.2gn of lil-gun working best.

Yes, certainly something to consider. If possible, I'd like to keep the vmax above 1,600fps for at least 200 yards to ensure I have proper expansion.

I'm not sure what powder charge I'd need yet because I haven't run it over the chrono.

I bought it from The Bay, delivered, for £29.99. Not cheap but it was the only one I could find. They are still available should you want one
