Aye I recon he was saying use upto 50 grains of bp substitute then the measure of shot from a cart.I had a look at an American bp site and wrote a long list of do's and don't s of bp shooting down and no1 on the list is don't use nitro!!:-)
Cheers enfield2band,you've all been a big help on here and im sure ill be picking your brains with more questions!I've read some real horror stories of people blowing fingers eyes and lots worse off with bp guns.I don't know if you have read it but my better half has ordered me a book off amazon called black powder guide by George C.Nonte,Jr so looking forward to reading that before I take the gun out which I plan to do in 2 weeks.
Use the shot from the cartridge not the powder !!!!???? Or make your own. V easy
Mr Nonte has been dead many years, and a very great deal of what he wrote does not apply here in UK where we do not hunt with BP firearms.
THE definitive BP book is the Lyman book of BP shooting, updated almost every year.
I've been shooting BP firearms since the late 1950s, and I've NEVER seen a single accident yet.
Black powder firearms shoot BP, or the BP subs - so long as you stick to that mantra, and don't fart around thinking you know better than fifty million other BP shooters, you'll be just fine.
We don't need alarmist posts advising new shooters not to blow themselves up. Most people of my acquaintance are naturally loathe do that.

No one on here is advocating using anything other than BP or Pyrodex
Nothing wrong with shooting clays with Black power.
