    Hi and welcome SJD63

Thanks for the info and the pic

maybe you are right and the earlier ones did have solid breech jaws - mine is a mk2 super but dont know if I dare take the risk incase I bugger it up

I might try drilling a tiny hole in to see though and make a decision with what I find

Going by the raised lugs on the main body and the dovetail in the barrel that's a Mk1.

Just weighed two empty bodies,Mk1 and 2,486 and 503 grams respectively.

Suggesting the breech jaws on both are indeed hollow.

    Interesting, thanks.

Perhaps it is 'do-able' with caution then?

I wonder if there is maybe some kind of spacer involved in the Bowkett jaws mod?

I bet somebody who reads his forum has done it, or has a modified model. Perhaps a small chance that they spot this thread!, but maybe they will chime in.

I'm still hankering after an early Meteor, so still curious on this specific subject, and found this pic.
Supposedly a Mk1 - certainly an early model.

'Hollowness' can be observed by looking at the inside of breech pin locator holes:

There is some meat there but not a lot. Not sure I'll be attempting it!

So, having read a bit on the subject now, I gather the main points are that once a Meteor jaws has been satisfactorily corrected in a vice the easier methods to stop them getting slack again are:
To fit a new (or v slightly oversize) breech pin, and new detent pin to tighten things up, then to consider the use of spacer/washers between the stock and its mounting tang beneath the jaws - to secure the stock, but without pulling 'outwardly' on the jaws - and perhaps most obviously, to always cock the rifle in alignment with the action, avoiding any 'sideways' pressures.

Right, enough! - I'm off to find me an old 'un ..

I guess you could drill out, weld around the cavity between the walls, filling the hollow in the vicinity of the hole, and then clean up. Would be quite a skillfull job though.
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.
