Minimal equipment requirements for loading 410 carts

As above ladies and gentlemen.

Having lots of difficulty finding both 2.5" and 3" 410 cartridges in the smaller shot sizes, well smaller then UK #6. I've found the full range of smaller shot sizes online from Just Cartridges but alas, carriage to the highlands makes it cost prohibitive for the sort of quantity I'm after.

So, the question is what; would the informed home loading massive consider the minimum equipment requirement for loading up low numbers of custom cartridges, safely?

I'm interested in this too... I hope to add a nice little .410 to my collection and do some shed reloading. I've heard it's the only economical caliber to reload.

all you will need. is the .410 empty cartridges, shot, wadding, primers and a .410 reloading press. Have a look around the internet for the press. You may find one on that bay website. i had to import one from the USA the bay website.The smokeless powder, shot and wadding will come from the local RFD. The empty cartridge cases. If you don't have them already, try a local shooting club. I have seen them advertised on that bay website. I currently reload my 20g cartridges after problems getting hold of 3" ones. The reloading press will help you get the right amount of shot and powder in the cartridge and is also used for inserting the new primer in.

I used to make hand reloading sets for .410, the minimum kit consisted of;

Base to stand the cartridge on while you knocked out the primer, turning the base over gave a flat surface for repriming. You could drill a hole in a block of wood for a similar effect

Two rods, one for knocking the primer through and the other for applying pressure while repriming. Again, could be done with dowels, metal drifts etc

A roll over tool to use with a drill. Available from various outlets

You can make powder dippers out of old cartridges, or just use the Lee ones, do check the weight against some scales, likewise shot.

I did the same to make sub/subsonic loads to use in my garden with a homemade mod. Very easy to do.

I no longer have my .410 and my reloading gear has been lying around doing nothing for to long.

Rockymountain reloading kit.
.410 brass cases x 59. (lost one in the field) 40 of these are unused.
These use shotgun primers so no faffing about with FAC rifle primers as with other brass cases.
Part used bag of overpowder cards, fibre wads and overshot cards.
Lots of Primers and LilGun..

and Roll over tool for plastic cases

He got a MEC press but neither of us are impressed with it. It does not like fine powder like H110, it seeps out of the reservoir everytime the powder/shot slide is operated.
Lee might be a better option.
Or, a Posness Warren if you have plenty of cash to spare.

A roll over and then get felts and over shot card off ., yes really. Either reuse old hulls or get new. Primers are easy and cheap to get. The only issue i found. Was buying the shot. I don't want 10 or 30kg so i bought some cheap 7.5 clay 12g. And nicked the shot. And the primers! Good enough or 48 410,'s with 17g of shot. Excellent pattern with the modded 410.. Used 13gn of 2400.

If you're using the shot you can use the powder and primers as well. You can tap the primers out with a wooden dowel very easily as you are only tapping on the outer case of the primer.

Powder is too fast for 410. It literally rips the carts in half do not use 12g powder..!

Yes we are. It'll likely be into the new year before i'm down your way, particularly with transport, again. If so I'll let you know, and you could do likewise if you're up here.

Funnily enough I'm just in from test firing my first .410 reloads, went well. My data didn't fit my components exactly on either of the loads I was testing, I was using weaker primers than those stated and I had to use a bit of compressed bog roll to lengthen the column to enable decent roll crimp, so i was really just trying to gauge suitability.

Both lots (1st with 110 2nd with SP3) did well with perhaps a little headroom for + half a grain of powder or the hotter primer stated in the data. But both seem more than usable without the need to push them further at this time.

I did pattern one of my 18g #7 loads from a 1/2 choke and if anything it was tighter than I was expecting at 30 yards, which bodes well for the venture thus far. I need to collect a quantity of big cardboard boxes or join a club with a pattern board, but given the distances involved the cardboard boxes up the croft are looking favourite at the moment.
