Should hinge barrels guns be made more sophisticated

So many springer fans like BB's yet they are crude, HW still have the old frankenstein hinge bolt like walther's but they have the old barrel lock taking up TP space and although guns like the AA PE and Diana are better is there a improvement that would be really satisfying, just wondering if the humble break barrel could be improved on

I'm rather fond of my springers just as they are...

There is only so much you can do with a hinge and lockup!

What improvements would you like to achieve?

Perhaps better bushing with a more sophisticated concealed lock up and a short TP

I had a HW35E once upon a time, it had the breech lock up mounted in the side of the breech block, you pushed a latch forward to release the barrel, didnt interfere with the tp at all and it worked well..

What's wrong with the Walther barrel lock up arrangement - like the one on the Century etc?

I only have an Original 35 of 1978 vintage ( my first air rifle in the UK ) and an HW 98. TBH I am surprised at how well the HW 98 works and how well the 38 year old Original is till going. I have no idea about other brands as I have never owned them.
Yes there are a couple of " improvements " that could be implemented , but the cost of the enigineering reflected in the final price would push the price up beyond reason, of that I am sure.

Nothing, I just don't like the look of the lever protruding out of the forend but even if you don't mind that it still has just a bolt for a hinge.

Maybe use square or hex section studding for a hinge ? That should give a solid lock up, for the discerning airgunner... cocking would be a bastard though, but that'll keep the riff-raff from buying too many and making them common
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.

Good idea. I recently had to replace the spring cassettes on a uPVC door handle.... maybe that type of mechanism could be used.

No, on second thoughts things are not so bad after all. Why fix if it isn't broken?
    Cheers, Phil
